They are not mutually exclusive

fair points on that

I know and am now a part of a great group who ironically call themselves "tigers" and somewhat ironically - “pushy parents” on Facebook in Russian. Mostly, it's a knowledge-sharing community that helps each other understand the UK education system in depth and make the right decisions. At the same time, all things concerning exams, olympiads, etc., are also discussed there. I believe there are similar communities in some other popular languages.

What olympiads? Maths or physics? That is interesting

@deanstreet all possible types of them. There are many parents whose childrenare talented in various things. The group is a very powerful source of knowledge in a wide spectrum of subjects. I’m not a bad researcher myself, but I found plenty of things I didn't know about.

"Olympiads are prestigious, high-level academic competitions for school students, primarily focusing on subjects like Mathematics, Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy), Informatics, and Linguistics to test deep knowledge and problem-solving skills. Major international competitions include the IMO, IPhO, IChO, IBO, IOI, and IOL"

Yes but you need to be Grade 8 violin, A* in Further Maths and Olympic level swimming before they will even consider adding you.

To be fair, that is only considered average on Mumsnet, unless the child is under 10, nevermind the Tigers.

deanstreet · 02/03/2026 22:51

To be a Tiger, you must own a golden whip and violin grade 5 by 11+

Ahhh, you’re the person who said you pretended to get divorced so that your child still got a bursary from their private school. Way to go Tiger ‘Mom’.

Ah. More weirdness! Good spot

personally it seems a good philosophy wanting to get the best from your offspring

the "best" by forcing them to do stuff they aren't interested in or enjoying for the sake of...what?
