Anyone's DC done the entrance exam for Year 7 yesterday? Just wondering how long it usually takes to hear if you have an interview? And how others found it? And how many get to interview stage, I believe there were 500+ there yesterday to sit it.

Bear in mind most of that 500 will have applied to several. MGS, WGS, kings, ManHigh, CHS etc plus Trafford grammars. Over the many years I’ve been in this area everyone I know got in. Albeit all were bright tutored kids. Some did SGS exam but went elsewhere

ducksandacorns · 15/01/2026 11:55

My child sat the exam. Found it ok, seemed to enjoy the day! Hoping to hear by tomorrow as interviews will be held from Wednesday. How was your child?

Hannah1471 · 15/01/2026 18:44

we received an interview request- does everyone get these? I really want SGS for our child, any tips for the interviews?

Clearinguptheclutter · 15/01/2026 18:48

My ds was offered a place last year but ultimately didn’t go.

its not a pass/fail as such but we got an invitation to interview quickly, couple of days. I don’t know anyone that didn’t. The interview was totally fine, it was me, dh and ds and they asked him about his hobbies etc and his interest in going there. I think they were trying hard to give the parents a positive impression. Got offered a place and ds really wasn’t very chatty.

I think everyone does other than the junior school kids who they already know

My ds is bright but not tutored. He got offered a place. So did two friends, also not tutored.

Obv prep schools prep them but state don’t so hence why all the ones I know from our primary & other state primaries etc were tutored. I do know of others but they were prep schools so not sure

Hannah1471 · 15/01/2026 19:53

If everyone gets an interview then how competitive is it to secure a place? Thanks

I don’t think it is that competitive tbh. It can’t be, my (by no means super) bright DS got offered a place with almost no prep, apart from the past papers on the website. He would have done well in maths but probably average in English.

however I do think the reference from his state y6 teacher (very diligent student) probably counted for a lot. that teacher has done a lot of references over the years and she can’t recall anyone not getting offered.

eurotravel · 16/01/2026 00:57

The prep school kids are interviewed too. Or were for those joining two years ago as I have friends with Yr9s who went to the prep

eurotravel · 16/01/2026 01:08

It’s a very good school. Great extra curricular. I think they look for well rounded kids with supportive parents : sport music etc. The kids I know who have gone there are great. I’ve also rarely heard of siblings not getting in other than one where the child tbh prob wasn’t the right fit for them and not academic at ten.
Mine didn’t apply for many reasons personal to me but if we were closer and I had more money it the one private near us I’d have considered

Thanks. We didn’t get offered an interview at Cheadle so I wonder if Cheadle exam is harder? Our preference was Stockport in any case

Atissue123 · 16/01/2026 10:04

Thank you, yes my DC has an interview so all good!

I’ve heard though from 2 people locally that their child did get an interview but then didn’t get offered a place so I know it’s not in the bag, however one of those children ended up going anyway after doing a lot of extra tuition to increase maths ability! The other I know is very shy so I assume didn’t do so well at interview.

Oh and my DD said the exam was quite easy but she’s top of her class and has had extra tutoring for maths too so I knew she was ready. She has also sat a few others and found them all ok so I assume will hopefully have a choice to make.

I also know someone who got a wait list offer unexpectedly. Presumably someone dropped out or got a better offer

Hannah1471 · 19/01/2026 17:32

I wonder when are offers sent out post interview?

Hi, has anyone got any tips or hints for interviews for Stockport Grammar?

Hannah1471 · 22/01/2026 18:45

Hello! Anxiously awaiting interview! Does anyone know how many places/how many candidates? Fingers crossed!

ducksandacorns · 23/01/2026 19:53

Hello! I’m not sure on numbers, but I imagine many places will go to the prep students who are moving up to Year 7. From what I’ve read the interview should be quite relaxed…

As I posted above, our interview was very relaxed. I think I said more than ds.

ducksandacorns · 29/01/2026 18:37

We are yet to interview but have heard there are approximately 100 places for non-prep students.

ducksandacorns · 25/02/2026 10:26

Hope all had good news yesterday

Tish245 · 04/03/2026 21:00

We are currently deciding between Stockport Grammar and Cheadle Hulme School. My DD has Dyslexia. Has anyone had experience of the learning support teams in Cheadle or Stockport?
