Hi All, DS sitting for these schools - have been opposed to tutoring on principle but (somewhat depressingly!) his school has suggested over the next few weeks pre Jan he has someone help him who knows how to prep for these specific schools in a formulaic way - as he has the knowledge but isn’t necessary applying it (and will be at a disadvantage vs others who have had this). Does anyone have suggestions for these specific schools please? Thank you in advance..

Sorry it’s not clear, do you mean for 11 plus and has he done ISEB and how did you prep for that?

thejollypostwoman1 · 08/11/2025 09:39

8+ apologies !

Is he at a prep school and did you try for 7plus, ie does he know how to sit an exam?

My son got the offer both school 8+, SPJ first round was ok, but second stage was extremely hard. His face was green when I picked him up. We didn’t have tutor but I think you need to let kid sit down and focus couple hours before Jan

Definitely get someone to guide if you haven't done this already. Mentorstudio may be able to help if not already overbooked. It's the busiest time of year. The 8+ content is not merely a year ahead of 7 plus, but much more advanced.

Thank you all so much, advised not to try for 7+ as young for year. Will try mentorstudio - just feel totally out of loop as to who is good having opted out until this stage!

Any other personal recommendations appreciated. Ideally people who have actually used their services. Looking for focus on technique and confidence building for these very specific exams!

Why the jump? Wouldn't students admitted via the easy 7+ struggle if the school teaches at the level of the students who got in via 8+, or wouldn't the 8+ students be bored if the school teaches to the 7+ admits?

Yes I couldn’t get my head round this either but decided not to dwell on it as even an “age appropriate” 8+ feels scary at this stage 😂
