Private Schools Northamptonshire

What are private schools like in Northamptonshire? There doesn't seem to be many recent posts about them on MumsNet. We are on the fence of whether private schools are stable at the moment. Our local school seems good but just doesn't offer the wide range of opportunities that private does.
The open days for state and private are coming up to compare them but if any parents have experience that would be helpful.
We are looking at Pitsford School, Spratton Hall, Wellingborough School and Quinton House.

Hey - what age are you looking at?

easternenergizer · 22/09/2025 07:16

The only one I know out of them well is spratton and that does very well... likely bolstered by increasing numbers from Maidwell closing so lots will have moved there!

easternenergizer · 22/09/2025 07:17

Winchester House is good too :-)

JennyRedHat · 22/09/2025 18:08

I heard that Spratton Hall has changed since all the Maidwell parents moved there. Is that just gossip?

I would like Reception. We’re on the fence about doing Junior and Senior or just Senior.

Winchester House. Feeds into Stowe but other destinations possible! You need to think about senior school though. You could spend a lot of money on a prep and then go to a very average comp at 11. Look at destinations to see what parents do for senior school and whether you want 11 or 13 transfer.

I don’t know how Spratton would have changed. They were pretty similar schools.

there are still investigations into Uppingham about the closure. I think parents are still angry. I feel like all is not well there.

Winny house feeds Stowe but children go to Oundle Marlborough rugby etc too. It will support.

I also think Bilton isnt bad if you can stretch the distance

Has anyone had experience with Laxton in Oundle?

OtherUser · 29/10/2025 23:18

I’m interested in pitsford and spratton, heard of a few people who withdrew their kids from pitsford though? I don’t know why. I am hearing that pitsford isn’t as good as the others, hence it’s cheaper.
but it’s really close to me so I want to like it! And it’s cheaper!! Any reviews??

A bit further afield, but have flexi boarding options, are Witham Hall and Bilton Grange. Laxton Junior in Oundle (Northamptonshire) is popular, and is the prep school of Oundle School, where most pupils move onto.

@JennyRedHat as to whether schools are stable, I’d look at school capacity vs number of pupils currently attending. That information is on a government website.

We’re looking at a similar list, what did you decide OP?

My child goes to Pitsford. She is happy and settled and is thriving both academically and in sports. It’s a small friendly school with 2 small classes for each year. There hasn’t been any drama and seems all the girls and boys get along in the class. Teaches are friendly and appear committed to their job.

can I ask is your daughter is junior or senior school? If juniors are you planning to stay there?
