Private schools:
We are wanting to look at the private school options for our son for secondary. I have made a a list of the ones that people have mentioned to me but I was wondering if there are any not on my list that I should be considering?

We currently live in KT8, so we would probably only want to look up to about a maximum of a 30-40 minute commute.

My son is bright but not top of the class. He is not particularly sporty but enjoys PE and athletics and lots of other extra curricular activities.

I just want to make sure I am considering all the good options available to us.

Reed’s
Halliford
Epsom college
Hampton Boys - possibly too selective for my son
St George's
St John's
St James
Downsend
Radnor House / Kneller Hall

Possibly Kingston Grammar but it's more selective than almost all on your list.

St John's and Epsom are using ISEB / experience day only - do you have an ISEB tutor lined up?

What year is he in?

What about City of London Freemans (if you have Downsend on the list) along with RGS Surrey Hills? Kingswood in Epsom has good support. The ACS Cobham school is apparently stunning and has brilliant facilities.

There is an independent schools show on in October which might help you work out what sort of school you're after.

My DS went to StJohn's. He had a really good experience and came out with good results. No complaints at all.

Ewell Castle?

Yeah I was thinking possibly Kingston Grammar but then thought would he even have a chance of getting there? 🤪

We haven't got a tutor yet.

Sadly we don't have a school bus that goes to City of London Freemans, so I don't think would be a realistic option.
I will have a look at RGS, Kingswood and ACS though. And I will definitely look up the independent schools show.

My DSs went to St George's. It's a while ago now, but absolutely fine - great facilities.

One loved it, one not so much.

Claremont Fan seems an obvious one to consider?

MrsBeltane · 09/09/2025 19:15

I think Freeman's has a bus from Ashtead station if that would work?

OP - isn’t this the exact same thread that you posted in July?

No it is not. My post back in July was asking for feedback and opinions on my list of schools, so I could try and narrow it down and figure out which ones might be a good fit for my son. This post is asking if there are any other schools i should be considering based on my final list.

But thank you for being so observant and checking in just incase I had made a drastic error and posted the same thing twice, I would definitely have wanted someone to set me straight on that 😀

Lots of other schools were suggested previously - am not sure there are many more out there

hamper555 · 11/09/2025 08:18

Although having said that, you could look at Sir William Perkins as it is taking boys from 2026

Sogrownup3 · 03/11/2025 22:47

How about Cranmore?
