RGS Worcester Vs Alcester Grammar School

Hi All,

I am contemplating what would be the best for my son’s education. He is in year 1. We think we may be able to send him to RGS Worcester in year 2.

He is smart enough and if given proper coaching, he might be able to get into grammar school.

My confusion is what are the advantages of starting private school at a younger age? And what is the difference between private and grammar schools for secondary education, specially the above 2 schools (RGS Worcester and Alcester Grammar School)

many thanks

My sister went to Alcester Grammar and I went to private school (failed 11+). My private school had smaller class sizes, and a far wider range of extra curricular, it was non selective (I think RGS is partially selective, but not as much as AGS). I think my school suited me as I wasn’t particularly academic. I think the main difference is at secondary level, A grammar school is state funded selective school, probably wouldn’t have as much extra curricular and would likely have 30 in a class as with most state school. RGS is likely to provide a more rounded education, better extra curricular offering, better facilities and smaller class sizes. If you were to put DC into RGS prep now, they wouldn’t have to do as many entrance exams into the senior school I believe.
