Any insight into Hilden Grange? Or the new headmistress? We are looking to move from our current Prep and are after a school with a bit more academic focus. The other school we are now also considering is Somerhill (but again a new headmistress).

Hilden Grange is a great school. Acadamics is very good. They play lots of sports. Lots of children goes to top grammar and top independent schools. Teachers are great.

Is the new headmistress nice? Still traditional? I would guess having been head at Derwent lodge at Somerhill previously she is? We just can't face another "progressive" head where the focus becomes everything and anything but academics.

Thank you for comment on sport as that is very important for one of our children.

Yes - I know both schools, PM me

Hi @SchoolsMum - jumping into this thread as we are trying to decide between Somerhill, HG and Sevenoaks Prep for Sep 26 entry for our son. Is it ok if I PM you as well? TiA

SchoolsMum · 13/10/2025 14:20

Hi @PulsHere - definitely! Do get in touch!

Jumping on this as my posted question hasn’t had any answers yet (only posted this afternoon), but we’re currently considering prep pre-schools (and in due course, school) around the Tonbridge area, so would love to hear what the original poster ending up doing? And any other thoughts on Tonbridge preps very welcome!

SchoolsMum · 13/11/2025 09:33

@MummaaBear2022 - I'm happy to help. The Tonbridge Preps are all very different and have their own individual characteristics. They all get good results in the 11+ (but legally they aren't allowed to prep children officially), but grammar schools are only right for a certain type of child and lots of children have tutors at that age as the Kent 11+ is so unique. It really depends on what you want from a school - space, sport, engineering, music etc. as they all have very different facilities. I've visited most of them for work - do PM me.

We absolutely love Hilden Grange, and the new Headmistress is just fabulous! We’ve got two boys and would really like Tonbridge, Skinners, or Judd to stay on the table as future options, and Hilden Grange does a great job preparing for that - not to mention it’s an easy scoot to school. Even though it’s on the smaller side, we’ve found it academically stretching, with brilliant clubs and loads of sporting opportunities, especially athletics. The only real downside compared with the bigger preps is that there’s no indoor pool, so we just organise swimming lessons through Monson.

We also have friends with children at Somerhill, and they’re genuinely thrilled with it - and, more importantly, their kids love it too! They seem to really enjoy the slightly bigger site and what feels like a fuller school day. Our close friends all have girls, though, so I can’t really comment on Yardley Court - only on the Pre-Prep and Derwent Lodge.
Honestly, I don’t think you can make a bad choice. Visit both and see which one feels right for you. If you’ve got older children, you could arrange taster days at each, or even book a stay-and-play session.

@Kentmum84 Happy for you to PM me - we’ve had quite a few families join from what I imagine is the “progressive” TW prep you’re describing. We also know others who have moved elsewhere from there and been really happy with their decision, especially with the added focus on academic basics.
