Exeter School thoughts?

We're looking at Exeter School, but I'm a little worried about the pressure at the school. If there is any !

With such great A level results how have your kids found the environment? DS is a bright boy and quite capable of getting excellent exam results but he's not great in environments where children compete against one another. It stresses him out, and knocks his confidence levels.

Any thoughts on the school? Any other good independent schools in the area? We couldn't see anything in the Exeter area.

You don't have masses of good independent schools to choose from in Exeter, @FlyingHigh55 . My understanding of Exeter School is that it's the most academic option outside the Grammar system, but I couldn't say whether it's particularly pressured. If you can travel as far as Tiverton you could consider Blundell's. I don't think it's any kind of hothouse, but it is capable of stretching bright pupils and giving them a great all-round experience.

My son went to Exeter Cathedral School and after year 8 to Colyton Grammar School but his friends were happy at Exeter School. If you can afford it I think it's a great school.

Thank you but that's a heck of a commute for us, around 50 mins each way so wouldn't really be in consideration. :-)

Train to Tiverton Parkway? Which side of Exeter are you?

My daughter went to Exeter School leaving after A levels about 18 months ago. We thought it was absolutely fantastic. There are all sorts of abilities there so I don't think you need to worry about it being a hothouse. We moved ours from Torquay Girls' Grammar in year 9 - best move we ever made.

Exeter is quite hot-housed. Look at Wellington if you can, excellent results but much more organic with a fantastic pastoral system.
