DS not happy with the little girl he sits next to

He says she calls him 'annoying' and there have been a few days when he has been quiet upset by this and other things she has said to him. I have shrugged the situation off to a certain extend, as he has to learn to take a few minor criticisms and stand up for himself. However the classes for next year have been announced and they are both again in the same class. DS is now worried he will end up sitting next to her again. The class is a mixed year 3/4 class, and the chances of both of them sitting together is high as they are of the same ability.

Should I raise the issue with the current class teacher as it's affecting his self esteem? How should I approach the subject without making the little girl look bad? I don't think she is bullying him, but she is grown up for her age and very assertive, whereas DS is still very babyish.

I would talk to the teacher he will have next year. Girls at this age frequently find boys annoying. My DD has also been called annoying by some of the girls in her class.

My son actually has taken pride in being the most annoying in his year at school.

I had a similar situation with DS (currently Yr 2) who has two out of the three boys he has problems with in his Yr 3 class next year. I just had a quiet word with his current class teacher and said that X and Y were making DS anxious and he was already getting into a state about next year, which I felt wasn't very good for him as he normally loves school, etc etc. He too was worried that he was going to end up sitting with one of these lads.

She was very understanding, had a chat with DS, had a chat with his new class teacher, and he hasn't fretted about it since. So it is worth having a word - explain that you aren't being precious but you don't want your DS worrying all summer! Good luck.
