Is it just my daughters school, or are loo rolls now generally forbidden as art materials because they are unhygenic?

PMSL.

seriously, WTF?!

FranSanDisco · 23/06/2010 09:59

THis has been aroudn for a while now. We used to zap them in the microwave in the Nursery but now we don't use them at all - a little OTT invho.

MathsMadMummy · 23/06/2010 10:02

seriously?

FranSanDisco · 23/06/2010 10:05

Sadly this is true and bonkers . When I asked WHY? I was looked at as if it were I who had lost the plot completely but there you go. Someone is paid to think up all these rules ya know so we don't want to see anyone out of a job do we?

mankyscotslass · 23/06/2010 10:06

Sadly it's true.

MaryAnnSingleton · 23/06/2010 10:07

mad as anything - and I have OCD with germ issues -even i think this is ridiculous !!

mummyrex · 23/06/2010 10:16

I think it's the norm now and has been for some years.

epithet · 23/06/2010 10:17

It isn't the norm here. Dd2's class used them as dinosaur legs last week. Somehow they are all still alive and kicking (the children, not the legs, most of which fell off because of rubbish quality sticky tape).

mice · 23/06/2010 10:18

was the same when mine were little and eldest is 14 - also egg boxes. Sometimes they would be zapped in the microwave though!

RobynLou · 23/06/2010 10:19

totally mad, but this has been going on for a while.

surely learning the 101 things you can do with a loo roll is a vital part of the development of children's creative minds?

Been reading this blog on outdoor education for a while and the page linked has a link to the health and safety executive saying this is a myth.

RobynLou · 23/06/2010 10:28

schools/businesses often ban things on "health and safety grounds" when in fact the h&s executive have never said those things are a problem.
It's the same as all the rules the EU supposedly force on us - mostly fabricated/taken out of all context/proportion by the red tops.

clemettethedropout · 23/06/2010 10:50

Loo rolls still being used enthusiastically by the nurseries and primaries around here...

FranSanDisco · 23/06/2010 10:57

I'm starting a petition to 'Bring back the loo roll for arts and crafts' then. Stoopid myth, pmsl.

littleducks · 23/06/2010 11:03

Schools ban them on 'health and safety' grounds are someone sends in a loo roll with shit smeared on the inside but they dont want to explain that to everybody ime

(Im not talking copious amounts just a small stain but still)

mrz · 23/06/2010 11:23

www.hse.gov.uk/myth/august.htm

There is no health risk or reason not to use loo rolls (as long as they are clean) just an ott reaction by some schools that has since been cleared up.

"This story started after a school briefly banned children from using cardboard
egg boxes to make things, threatening years of Blue Peter tradition. They were concerned
that children might catch salmonella.
Within a few days the school realised there was guidance from the county council and
an organisation for teachers called CLEAPSS, making clear that as long as egg boxes and
toilet roll centres look clean, there is no reason why they should not be used.
Just another storm in an egg cup?"

lucykate · 23/06/2010 11:33

i am assuming my dc's school don't have a ban in place as i've got a loo roll rocket sat on my dining table

mummyrex · 23/06/2010 12:47

thanks mrz , I will pass that info onto my childrens' school and nursery

Feenie · 23/06/2010 17:19

I defy anyone to watch this teachers.tv video, which explains how bacteria spray 2 metres or more when a toilet is flushed without the lid down, and carry on using loo rolls in Art/DT.

HurleySatOnMe · 23/06/2010 17:20

If you went through life thinking like this, you'd never touch anything. Madness

Feenie · 23/06/2010 17:27

No, you just wouldn't make craft things with items right next to the toilet. Common sense to me!

HurleySatOnMe · 23/06/2010 17:29

Feenie, next time you shake hands with someone, just imagine where that hand may have been. Just saying .
Are you one of these people who carries disinfectant in their bag? I'll put a fiver on that you are.

Feenie · 23/06/2010 17:38

I am not!
I am quite sensible (I think). But ever since seeing this video whilst teaching micro-organisms to Y6, I have preferred not to use loo rolls for arty things. Or keep my toothbrush near the toilet!

Hulababy · 23/06/2010 19:13

Not banned at the infant school I work at.

In the last few weeks I have used them to make astronauts, lighthouses and musical instruments.

mumto2andnomore · 23/06/2010 20:44

Always have been banned where I work, Ive heard about microwaving them but always thought they might set on fire !
