Loo rolls banned in arts classes

Is it just my daughters school, or are loo rolls now generally forbidden as art materials because they are unhygenic?

Not banned here as some were requested yesterday. I sent in 3 this morning!

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 23/06/2010 21:35

I don't want my DDs making stuff with other people's old loo roll tubes. People wash their hands after wiping their bums and handling the loo roll, not before.

The thought of my DDs then picking them up makes me feel quite sick.

You can buy cardboard tubes from art supply companies to make your rockets and shakers.

Clary · 23/06/2010 22:45

Hilarious thread.

I mean really, who handles the loo roll tube when they wipe their bum???

No-one's suggesting bringing in the loo roll, are they?

Some people a bananas and believe all the bobbins made up by printed in the red tops.

Feenie · 24/06/2010 09:30

It wasn't about the handling of the loo roll, it was about bacteria leaping in a over a 2 metre radius from the toilet every time it's flushed. It's not on a red top, it's on a DFE Teachers.tv video produced for Y6 children!

Hulababy · 24/06/2010 20:58

I think the potential baxteria on the average loo roll tune is probably neglible compared to the amount of other bacteria the average 4-7 year old child comes in contact with!

Feenie · 24/06/2010 21:01

I think we should have that comparison checked out scientifically.

southeastastra · 24/06/2010 21:06

urban myth but kitchen towel card is usually stronger (tip)

Feenie · 24/06/2010 21:07

'Tisn't an urban myth. It's on a DCSF Teachers.tv video, so it must be true!

3littlefrogs · 24/06/2010 21:09

There was a study published in the British Medical journal some years ago which was nauseating reading. Toilet roll tubes are pretty filthy in terms of the amount of e-coli and other lovely germs.....

southeastastra · 24/06/2010 21:12

they're crap for projects anyway too flimsy nowadays

Meglet · 24/06/2010 21:12

true here. The dc's nursery said we can take in kitchen roll tubes but not loo rolls.

They've been banned for a couple of years.

Mind you, I do put the seat down when I flush so germs don't go flying everywehere.

edam · 24/06/2010 21:13

Last time we had a thread about this, someone pointed out their PhD supervisor, a microbiologist, had actually checked the microbial load on a whole lot of loo rolls just because he was so irritated by this idea. Turned out to be pretty unspectacular. Dunno why the BMJ article disagreed, maybe those researchers got theirs from public loo or something?

southeastastra · 24/06/2010 21:14

was an urban myth two years ago how times change

anyway poo is only poo isn't it, not nuclear waste

i stick my hand down the loo to clean it. i'm no scared of germs me

DilysPrice · 24/06/2010 21:17

Feenie I saw that on Mythbusters - they tested whether you actually ended up with measurable amounts of faecal bacteria on your toothbrush if you kept it in the bathroom and found that you did.....but they also found the same amount on the control samples kept under wraps in a different room.

ravenAK · 24/06/2010 21:20

These microbes that leap out of the loo - what's their lifespan?

Feenie · 24/06/2010 21:21

Here's a relevant BMJ article - not the one mentioned, though, just the opinion of one microbiologist.

Clary · 25/06/2010 00:23

well feenie if that's really an issue better not brush your teeth! (well not in my 2m square bathroom anyway!)

My previous post was actually addressed to the poster immediately before me, who seemed rather concerned that people might pass on germs from their bottoms to the loo roll middle in some way...

Feenie · 25/06/2010 06:29

The microbioologist in the BMJ article I cited spoke about the very real possiblity of germs penetrating to the loo roll and I had already mentioned toothbrushes too - 2 out of 10 for reading comprehension!

Feenie · 25/06/2010 06:29

microbiologist _ it's clearly too early to type properly.

I found this bit interesting
"The average office contains around 20,961 per square inch compared with 49 in a toilet bowl.? He found that teachers had the grubbiest desks, lawyers the cleanest. " so pleased I haven't got a desk

and this

"Toilet bowls in people?s homes are usually so clean that ?you could eat your dinner out of them?, says Professor John Oxford, a virologist at St Bartholemew?s and the Royal London Hospital. "

Feenie · 25/06/2010 17:18

Ewwwwwwwwww at the bit about handbags!

I defy bacteria to find a square inch of my desk on which to reside.

mrz · 25/06/2010 17:21

Which is exactly why I don't have a desk!

CoupleofKooks · 25/06/2010 17:25

but Feenie did you used to get a lot of stomach bugs or whatever before you moved your toothbrush? i believe that the bacteria is sprayed around, but does this have any effect on our health at all? if people are keeping their toothbrushes by the toilet but not getting ill from it, what does it matter?

Feenie · 25/06/2010 17:47

No-ooo.

But it's icky.

snowlady · 25/06/2010 17:52

they are not banned at rainbows. Dd came back with a model using one this week. I must say I thought it was slightly unhygenic
