Summer Uniform, sort of am I being unreasonable ?

My girls started a mixed prep school last September and in the prospectus it stated that summer dresses were an option in the summer months, one I would have gone for as they make life easier getting dressed in the mornings.
However they've now been made compulsory despite not even being in stock at the school shop as of today.
They go back on the 12th and break up on 7th July with 10 days for half term in between, so we are looking at 11 weeks wear from them and they are £44 each, plus an optional hat
I'm sure other parents will be moaning too but it is ridiculous isn't it, worth an email to the head would you think ?

There won't be any spares lying around because the school shop hasn't sold out, they haven't had them at all, so at least we're all in the same boat I guess.

£44 is ridiculous.

my kids are at prep school - dresses are bog standard John Lewis - £12 each or £6 second hand.

get on the PTA and push for a change.

So they've billed you for something that they can't actually provide? Isn't that illegal?

I'm not even sure the school knows the situation as the shop is a private business which hires rooms I guess to hold their stock within the school grounds.
When I called on Tuesday to ask what was happening, (they only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays) I was told no sign of them but if they weren't in by Thursday this week, ready for Monday then the shop would inform the head, great.

£44 is a lot! DD's are £25 new or as I get the £5 from second hand shop. I got 5 for the price of 1 new one! £44 is almost as much as a blazer from our school outfitters!!

CowsGoMoo · 08/04/2010 23:01

£44 is a ridiculous amount to pay for a summer dress! My childrens prep require all girls to wear the summer dress (a bizarre blue, white and mustard yellow thing) from when they return back to school but they cost £23 brand new and £11 in the second hand shop!
Our school used to have summer uniform as optional but it changed last year.... at least the school outfitters were prepared for the huge rise in dresses required.

School uniform dilemma, need a purple gingham dress for summer uniform but don't like the polyviscose variety as they make the little one sweat, anyone know where I can get hold of a cotton gingham dress, I'm going insane trying to find one!!!!

M&S don't do them nor do BHS matalan George,Tesco.... soa s you cans ee running out of options!!!

bigcar · 09/04/2010 09:46

squidlet here any good?

ConstantlyCooking · 09/04/2010 10:20

Millymoo - you should try informing the head and complain about the shop. It might be a private business but it will have had to persuade the school that they should be the outfitters. In N London schools can and do change "official suppliers" if the service is not up to scratch.

They'll be in on 20th we've been told.
And if they aren't I'm refusing to buy one (or three).
I've sent in an email expressing my opinion, the trouble is I suspect is only 20% of the school are girls so it probably costs more to make the patterned dress per item although why we couldn't have had red and white checked ones from M&S I don't know.

What summer uniform do the boys wear at prep schools?

mummyloveslucy · 11/04/2010 19:42

My daughter is at a private school and they don't have a summer uniform, just white ancle socks rather than navy long ones and no jumper over the pinafore.
Her whole uniform which encluded a wool duffle coat, blowse, pinafore, jumper, socks and an art apron came to £110. I thought that was pretty good for a private school.
(I admit, not as good as state though)

I think this is a perfect opportunity to set a up a second hand uniform sale, don't you?
