Am I worrying unnecessarily about parental playground politics?

My eldest is 3.5, going to school the term after next.

I just get the feeling, from toddler groups, on here, nursery etc. that I may be a bit naive to think that it will be a breeze. Playdates for a start, rules, said/unsaid, being popular/unpopular etc.

I am worrying about it now(not excessively just in passing of course) and wondered if anyone would be interested in letting me know a few of the ropes, as they see it.

What are good playground manners? What winds people up? How can I make sure I am not going to cause a detriment to my son by ending up disliked? Do people really get all silly about what is worn to collect children? What have people said/done that gets your goat?

Honestly, I think you are overthinking this! I've never done anything special to curry favour with people, a friendly smile or hello to everyone goes a long way. There are undoubtedly cliques in many schools, but the playground politics I read about on here have honestly passed me by.

I think it helps as well to have a circle of friends outside school, that way if you make friends it's a plus rather than being the be-all and end-all.

I'd say, don't seem desperate -- so don't overthink!

It'll be fine. You could "stand back" a little for the first couple of days to watch a bit and see who you like and who your child likes.

I just smile and say hello
then maybe 'did you have a nice weekend'
in reception their will be whole class parties and you talk to people there
then after that you have familar peoe to talk to
it is just the same as mingling at work, at uni, in the pub etc. Mum's /parents aren't a different species

You are worrying far too much about things that aren't a cause for worry.
As long as you aren't someone who is interested in smiling and chatting to parents who are friendly, you'll be fine and so will your DS.
As for what to wear to collect your child from school.... No-one cares - and if they do then you ought to consider moving!

Yes, I think I am usually OK getting along with people. I just sometimes read threads on here and think, boy, what am I in for! People seem so judgemental about EVERYTHING! Perhaps I am just over sensitive. Thanks for all the replies - glad I am over thinking it - at least if every one thinks I am then it is nothing to be worried about.

99% of the time it is not like the threads on here! Most parents in most schools are just ordinary normal people. Of course there is the occasional odd person, same as you find anywhere, and the occasional judgy person. But they are usually such a rarity that they don't "set the tone" of the whole place.

As to clothes - I had never even heard of the concept of a "school-run dress" before I came on MN, despite having gone through the whole of DS's primary school years. I went in everything from smart office clothes to jeans to gardening and decorating clothes, and I don't think anyone was judging me for any of them (though people do tend to smile indulgently if you turn up with a smear of emulsion across your face ).

Just be friendly and treat people as you'd like them to treat you, and it will be fine.

I wouldn't look at threads on here about playground politics as being representative of RL necessarily! Unless there's something particularly dramatic about them, most playground experiences aren't worth starting a thread about so you only hear about the ones with touchy issues

As for what to wear, I agree that there are a lot of threads on here about what to wear for the school run which I don't understand.
I wonder if most of the judgey things about school run clothing is from the types who only have to hop out of their 4x4s to pop little into the playground before they zoom off for their latte with friends

Lots of mums similar to you (some not but you will work it out quite quickly). Say Hi, and be friendly and I am sure they will do the same in return.
