Can anyone advise me on being a school governor I am tempted to apply?

I am sahm with 3 dc between 5 and 11 months. I have experience of working in public sector and was training as a transport planner before dc arrived, I have also helped at numerous road safety events for primary aged children.

I would like to be of service and feel I have useful skills but what does being a governor entail aside from attending meetings?

lost with only 12 votes.

Blimey, I'm not sure there were 12 votes cast in total last time we had an election, the parents at our school are very apathetic, despite massive efforts on our part to be around at every school event, and at drop-off & pick-up times, so that the governors are 'known faces' around the school.

if you really want to be a governor talk to the chair - see if there are any other vacancies - or ask them to keep you in mind if someone steps down. You don't have to be a parent governor.

I don't know if it is a popularity contest tbh. Wasn't for me. I was seriously worried when I stood as I don't really know that many people but I managed to come second, close behind the 1st place woman and miles ahead of the 3rd placed guy and left the well known woman (who didn't get elected) standing.

Please don't think you have to canvas support or hold any hustings. A good statement is the most important thing imo.

Oh my - only 2 votes. Wouldn't you just want to curl up and die with the shame. Imagine if the other one wasn't their other half?!

We were allowed to go the count - I would know whether DH voted for me. Mind you I filled in the voting form for him so there was no danger he didn't vote for me.

Hmm. Well DS has only been at the school a week so the other parents don't know anything about us (or each other for that matter except in a few cases).
Mind you I think it's not going to be feasible for me to do it due to lack of childcare.
