we planned to privately educate dc, but dh lost his job and now dc is going to a state primary - downgraded from good to satisfactory by ofsted . if we have dc tutored from yr 1 say, can we get up to standard of a private school(with a view to moving dc if our finances improve - possibly at 7, but definitely at 11). Can an hour a week really achieve anything? Anyone done this from early on? Interested in any views. I now work f/t so doing lots of stuff with dc after school myself is not really an option (except at weekends). I'd be interested to know when tutoring shd really start. My friend said her primary school gets great league table results but that's because most parents pay tutors. Also; what do most people get tutors for - maths or English or both?

Just spotted an interesting ad on here for a website to help people choose independent schools. Haven't heard of that organisation before - must read further.

And there lies the road to communism.

mrz · 18/08/2009 17:49

It could be argued that communist Russia had the most selective education policy

Greensleeves · 18/08/2009 17:58

lol at communism

is that the terror what lies at the root of all this?

Greensleeves · 18/08/2009 17:59

that, not what

Selection by what mrz? Was it bribery like almost everything else? I know nothing about education in communist Russia, do tell.

kathyis6incheshigh · 18/08/2009 18:06

They were damn good at producing mathematicians.

Greensleeves · 18/08/2009 18:07

and physicists

snorkle · 18/08/2009 18:14

Oh yes - that's right, I remember now, thanks. They had talent scouting missions & then shipped all the most promising gymnasts etc off to discipline specific training camps in obscure parts of the country uprooting them from their families and creating individuals who indeed excelled in their field, but at the expense of just about everything else. ButI guess we are digressing somewhat....

Greensleeves · 18/08/2009 18:19

sounds a lot like boarding school

paisleyleaf · 18/08/2009 18:21

AspasiaManos "At primary level I've only seen the private sector produce such a list".

Wouldn't that be because the state sector teachers have to be qualified anyway?

Daisydancer, I think any derisory seeming comments have come up more since someone earlier said about 'envy'.
It's just not true that everyone envies a private education, and sometimes it seems people need to explain why.

AramintaCane · 18/08/2009 18:24

Greensleeves is right that is boarding school

AramintaCane · 18/08/2009 18:26

That is right paisley "envy" extremely patronising.

snorkle · 18/08/2009 18:26

boarding scools of the worst kind too. I'm not a great fan of them, but accept they suit some people for various reasons.

snorkle · 18/08/2009 18:28

& there are both state and private boarding schools. I was considering the boarding issue seperately from the state/private debate.

teamcullen · 18/08/2009 18:37

Id send DCs to boarding school...

But only if it was Hogwarts

KembleTwins · 18/08/2009 18:41

Sorry, teamcullen - you only get to send your kids there if they invite you. And this year's letters have already been received

teamcullen · 18/08/2009 18:46

Yes Kemble.. DD didnt get a letter 2 years ago so she had to make do with the local state school and frre laptop.

DS1 isnt due to go to secondary school till next September, so we can live in hope for Hogwarts. If not it will be the local comp for him too.

KembleTwins · 18/08/2009 18:47

Fingers crossed then. I hear the new potions teacher is pretty hot.

AramintaCane · 18/08/2009 18:50

He may be hot but he probably doesn't have a teaching qualification Hogwarts is a private school

My reading of the thread is that the negative comments have been directed towards private schools.

Certainly my assessment of the teaching populations in the schools near me was that the independent school teachers had better degrees, more of them and from better universities. Which bears out what the Sutton Trust were saying. Of course this information doesn't tell me if they can teach, but it seemed to me to be a useful piece of information to have.

Soooo, we've established that independent schools provide better qualified teachers, brighter students (the selective ones anyway) better facilities, smaller class sizes, better sports and music, and FAR better academic results.

I'm happy to be duped into paying for them.

Greensleeves · 18/08/2009 19:10

"Soooo, we've established that independent schools provide better qualified teachers, brighter students (the selective ones anyway) better facilities, smaller class sizes, better sports and music, and FAR better academic results."

No, none of those things have been established at all.

We've certainly established that private shcools don't have to employ qualified teachers at all though, and often employ completely unqualified teachers, with disastrous consequences for the children.

You're paying for social exclusivity, not "excellence". You could at least admit it.

AspasiaManos · 18/08/2009 19:12

paisleyleaf - I meant a list that included their degree plus educational qualification, e.g. BSC PGCE - that is the kind of thing I've seen private schools produce. The PGCE (or GTP - whatever they get called when they finish) are assumed at state schools so don't need to be included.

Anyway had a look at the Comp prospectuses and one didn't include qualifications and one did (along the lines of BSc, BA or whatever - no mention of the university). I can't find the private school prospectus (LOL - maybe I binned it) but I'm sure it included the university.

Shall we discuss the charitable status of Fee Paying schools?
