But my dd had a target of 6b for the end of year 7 - that's quite normal for people who get a 5 in year 6. And about 25% or so of year 6s get a level 5 usually, don't they? (I think it's higher this year, though)

janeite · 18/07/2009 17:24

Fircone - it really will depend on the catchment of the school - and the L5 isn't devalued just because many pupils in a school get it because that may well be the general demographic of the area.

And the target of 6b is of course then perfectly sensible and the pupil's future performance will be measured against that target.

25% nationally sounds about right Seeker (btw I thought some of your comments on the private schools thread were fab but I didn't post on there as I wasn't up for an argument!).

ChuppaChups · 18/07/2009 17:41

Here is a copy of my original post - where does this ask for comments on my daughters "genius" as you put it?

love you

Don't remind me of those recent threads. Mention SATS to private school parents and it just gives them the opportunity to say that of course their offspring passed that level years ago and that SATS are so limiting and their education is so much broader blah de blah de blah.

janeite · 18/07/2009 17:51

Oh ffs. Yawn.

janeite · 18/07/2009 17:51

Sorry Fircone - not you.

seeker · 18/07/2009 18:03

ChuppaChups - you should be really proud of your daughter and 6c is a good target for the end of year 7 - but it isn't "really high" - it's more or less what you'd expect of a Level 5 in year 6 child. And that's about 23%ish of the school population.

Thank you janeite, a bit of a hobby horse of mine I'm afraid!!

Feenie · 18/07/2009 19:17

Last year, 31% of children in Y6 got L5 in Maths nationally, and 44% in Science.

Level 4 is average - stands to reason that lots of children will therefore be above it and below.

snorkle · 18/07/2009 19:27

OP you ask "what age does this belong to"
The answer is that

By the time children finish KS2 and beyond there is a very wide range of normal achievement level, so there isn't really an answer to "what age does this belong to". Level 6 is achieved by some bright year 6s (I reckon if 44% nationally are getting L5, then a sizeable minority, maybe around 5%, of those will actually be on L6, but not often recorded as such due to the limitations of the tests), conversely, some less able children don't achieve L6 by year 9, but it's all just the way a normal spread of ability in those age groups works.

ChuppaChups · 18/07/2009 21:20

oh yawn. ffs lmao

seeker · 18/07/2009 22:13

So what edid you want us to say, chuppachups?

ChuppaChups · 19/07/2009 16:46

i wanted to know what an average childs age would be a achieve a 6c as my daughter is 11, i was under the impression that doing well at school was a good thing and just wanted to know what 6c level work was so that as a parent i could research this and help her. Being told that i shouldnt delude myself isnt what i wanted to hear, nor "oh ffs yawn"

my dh and i feel that mumsnet is a playground of cyber bullies and i feel sad for you all.

good riddance

Chuppachups 6c for end of yr7 is good, however you said it was really high, but it's not that high. She would have had a mid 5 for a target of 6c. In my DS's yr6 class the majority of the class would have had a similar target. I don't know my DD's targets yet, she is 11 and starting secondary in September. Her targets will be for the end of KS3 rather than end of yr7 but I suspect she will be on a similar level by the end of Yr7.

You didn't ask how you could support your DD with the curriculum , you just asked what equivilant yr that was.

Collins Revision is very good

verygreenlawn · 19/07/2009 19:42

Don't feel that way, ChuppaChups. I haven't followed the thread in detail but just wanted to say that I honestly find the education section here really useful (and yes - I admit to being one of those mums who knows next to nothing about stuff like SATs and so I love to come on here and try and work out what the hell it's all about)

ChuppaChups · 19/07/2009 22:16

it seemed high to me hence i wanted advice. i wish i hadnt asked for it now and is rather put a downer on it all.

I was not trying to show off, just trying to find out stuff.

this is really sad.

OP posts:

Don't take it to heart chuppa.
Are you feeling a bit put out because it's not quite as good as you thought?
It really doesn't matter your dd is doing just great

ChuppaChups · 19/07/2009 22:33

am not put out at all, i just wanted facts on age groups and not opinions on whether its good or not good.

OP posts:
seeker · 19/07/2009 22:38

So why did you say that your dd's target was 'really high"?

Why are so so cross with people who have told you that it is very good, but not exceptional, and it's not a "year 8? or higer" target?

Why won't you listen to people who know what theya re talking about?

ChuppaChups · 19/07/2009 22:41

why dont you read my question? i didnt ask anyone if THEY thought my dd target level was high i asked what age group they belong too.

READ THE QUESTION EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
seeker · 19/07/2009 22:43

But you've been told about 50 times - about the end of year 7 for a child who got level 5s in year 6!

ChuppaChups · 19/07/2009 22:52

enjoy the rest of your evening on mumsnet. i no longer wish to discuss my dd with you.

OP posts:
ChuppaChups · 19/07/2009 22:53

my daughter no in year 7! shes in year 6!!

OP posts:
bruffin · 19/07/2009 23:01

Her target was for year 7!

snorkle · 19/07/2009 23:58

It doesn't 'belong' to any specific age group, but to a spread of age groups (as I said before). For an average child (which wasn't your original question, but which you asked later) probably around year 8 given that 44% achieve a 5 in year 6.

For what to do with her to help nurture her interest (which again you didn't ask until much later in the thread), I'd recommend looking out for any science lectures or open days aimed at secondary age kids (there's a great science day at Cambridge in March for instance, with chemo lectures & hands on stuff in the labs). Also books - 'horrible science' ones often go down well at that age.

It is a good target though, and you are justifiably proud of her. Just be careful what you ask/how you ask it on here (if you want advice, you need to make that clear) & don't get too stressed if people pull you up a bit for being a bit braggy if that's how you've come across (which you did slightly, however unintentionally). For now, just be thankful you didn't post this on G&T - the responses would likely have been much more extreme.

ChuppaChups · 20/07/2009 13:12

my message was succinct enough thankyou plus i have been using this site for 6 or 7 years now.

My daughter is on g&t list for music - i must visit that section later, i have so many questions!

I dont think there is much more to say really, i did click on a link posted by someone on this thread and that has answered my question completely.
