Any primary teachers around who are willing to help a secondary teacher please?

I've been googling in an increasingly futile manner, trying to find the primary school spelling banks, that were published for each year iirc. Does anybody happen to know where I can find them please? Tia.

The Fonz? Lol. Thanks so much for your help - it's just arrived.

Would be interested to know how primary teachers feel about all that thar new-fangled stuff them's making you do now, too.

you must have missed the live webchat

spellicious · 06/07/2009 23:29

wow thanks popsycal
just what I have been looking for

Feenie · 07/07/2009 09:38

I believe the only problem with Sparklebox is the obligatory downloading of their toolbar with some resources - you can avoid it if necessary. But some people downloaded it and it made a mess of their school networks.

popsycal · 07/07/2009 09:57

feenie
that is not what we have been told
feel free to CAT me

Feenie · 07/07/2009 12:32

I think I know what you have been told - our LEA reckon that apparently it is malicious gossip!

popsycal · 07/07/2009 13:59

hmm
i was told directly from an LEA advisor and it says it on the website....

until i know more, I will be using other stuff

Caz10 · 07/07/2009 14:39

oh tell tell - if you can!!

Feenie · 07/07/2009 18:00

What website?

It's related to a CP issue, I believe, Caz, but has now been going on since November. If it was really true, wouldn't other authorities have banned it by now?

Caz10 · 07/07/2009 21:42

(continues to be thick...) What is CP? Copyright protection? I am in Scotland so obviously a bit slower than others but we could still access it at the end of term on the school network.

janeite · 07/07/2009 21:48

I love the way this thread has turned all cloak and dagger! I still can't find all of the word banks - are they not used at all in primary now then? I really, really want them!

Child protection.

Look it up on TES - Sparklebox is still allowed to post, which also makes me think it's rubbish. The Times Ed wouldn't go near if there was even a whiff of truth in it.

popsycal · 08/07/2009 10:15

janeite - there is no year 6 one and no year 3 one

Caz10 · 08/07/2009 13:25

That is very bizarre, had never heard a thing about that before. A bit random though, sticking up their resources in your classroom isn't putting anyone at risk.

janeite · 08/07/2009 17:48

Okay Popsycal, thanks. I have found something else called the 'single word spelling test' which I think will help. It seems to be based around high and medium frequency words, NLS lists etc.

HYGFL have issued statements about the Sparklebox issue
www.hgfl.org/hgfl/custom/files_uploaded/uploaded_resources/5261/sparklebox.txt

InThisSequinBraYesYouOlaJordan · 31/12/2009 19:39

I may be being thick here, but that statement; who is it attributed to? it looks like a Word document to me, no logo nothing. There's been no mention of any issue with sparklebox in my authority so I'm in the dark.

I can't believe that this isn't bigger news!

mrz · 31/12/2009 20:04

This is the opening page click the link on the bottom left {view item}
the statement is from Yorkshire & Humberside grid for learning

this is from Wiltshire LA.

Janeite, if you are supporting children working below level 2 in reading and/or writing then you should also have a look at Letters and Sounds (google that one too!). The pupils may be struggling with phonics or are old enough never to have been taught it in the way we do now. It isn't a cure-all, but worth a look. I'm a yr 2 teacher and Literacy leader.

Feenie · 02/01/2010 09:28

Popsycal, looks like you were right all along. Have also seen reports of Daniel Kinge's (Sparklebox director) first conviction - pretty sick stuff.

Why the hell LEAs couldn't have told everyone after the first conviction, I have no idea.

Mrz, are you Msz on TES?

popsycal · 02/01/2010 09:36

thanks for confirming this as I was beginning to doubt myself

Feenie · 02/01/2010 09:41

I'm sorry that I didn't believe it, Popsycal!

I still can't believe TES allowed a known sex offender to freely promote his child-related business on their boards.

Or that some LEAs were willing to share information and others were so mysterious.

mrz · 02/01/2010 13:35

yes feenie
