Just that really. Like an antenatal thread but for parents of children starting primary in Sept.

We have our taster afternoon in a couple of weeks - it all feels so alien. Haven't felt this out of it since I bought my 1st pack of nappies and got the giggles at the checkout!

ah bless you paisleyleaf!

tits - wave! hello its me from sw thread! try not to worry about ds, im sure he will be absolutely fine once he goes again, but if you are concerned i would definitely speak to the school about it - perhaps if he is already at the pre-school they could help with easing him in?

Turns out mine won't really be leaving nursery - he'll be back there in Feb when they demolish the reception classroom (to build a new one).
I've got his school play to get through next week though - found myself completely unexpectedly crying at the Christmas carols in December. I always used to mock my mum when she did things like that - obviously you can't help it!

fuzzypeach · 05/07/2009 19:43

golgi, i was the same, and my mum loves to remind me of this now when i get all teary about things!

simpson · 05/07/2009 19:57

Tomorrow is the start of DS's last week at the nursery attached to the school as we are on holiday after that.

Think reality is beginning to hit for DS as I have told him he will have new teachers from Sept and he said "no thanks mummy"

paisleyleaf · 05/07/2009 20:05

Oh crikey. We're all going to be booing all summer.
I hope not though, and it's just that it's bad at the moment with having to say 'goodbyes' to keyworkers etc

Tried some knee high socks on DD the other day.

simpson · 05/07/2009 21:52

think I am going to put DS in his school uniform a few times over the summer so hopefully by the first day of term I will be hardened to it and not blub

Doubt it will work though

golgi · 05/07/2009 22:06

I think I'm going to too, Simpson - to try and train him to put it on! It took him 30 minutes to get dressed this morning (pants, shorts and t-shirt) - although most of the time was procrastination (him) and getting exasperated (me).

swissmiss · 05/07/2009 22:08

Well DS has already wrecked his logo polo shirt, they wear them to pre-school sessions and after 2 wks it's stained with red paint (from making ladybirds!) on the front and has copydex on the back (probably my fault!) Has had the full heavy duty wash routine incl. vanish powder but I'm at a loss and kinda about it.

pantshavenames · 06/07/2009 10:29

Hello, please can I join this thread, have PFB DS going for his taster session this afternoon and suddenly it's all a bit real.
Also, I need some people I can over-obsess with so DH will stop laughing at me.
First question- we have a long and unusual surname so instead of squeezing in his first and last name on a label there's no reason why I can't just have his surname is there? I would bet money on no-one else at the school having the same name. And what needs labelling? T-shirts, trousers, jumpers, coats yes: pants and socks, no? AArgh, I have visions af everyone laughing at him because he's not wearing the right socks.

lollyheart · 06/07/2009 10:58

Hello pantshavenames

We have a long surname too, i did put dds first name on aswell as i think it looks nicer but thats just me

Have you got your labels yet? i put a link on a few pages back where i got mine from, i think they're really nice.

I wont label pants and socks just everything else.

I dont think i will be to sad when dd leaves playschool cause my ds1 starts there in sept.

Acinonyx · 06/07/2009 11:10

Dd is mad keen to get her uniform which has started arriving in parcels. Very hard to judge the sizes though. Bought a red dress from next for 5 yrs but it's a bit tight and I should probably exchange it for a 6 - but the procedure is so complicated I'm not sure I can face it. Maybe she'll slim down by next spring?

Decided to get sew in labels (must be mad!). Plan to watch trashy telly and sew labels all through August.

Still worried about toilet training. Tree - dd is due to see the chiropracter on Thursday and I'm waiting on a referrel to a paediatrician. This is my Major Worry about school.

Maybe I am a heartless old bag but I don't feel remotely sad about dd going to school. Excited and anxious - but not sad. Maybe it will hit later - but I suspect not.

Can't remember if we need PE shoes or not

simpson · 06/07/2009 11:15

Think I have pretty much got everything now except socks and PE top.

No PE shoes here, just bare feet so one less thing to worry about

Yes will also be watching trashy TV (have just ordered Bad Girls on DVD ) and sewing...

Not too worried about toilet here but am worried about lunch (he will be having school dinners) Hope that he won't be expected to choose things canteen style, he will never manage it!!

fuzzypeach · 06/07/2009 12:46

What have you all done about PE kit? Our uniform list just says shorts and t-shirts and pumps - where have you got them from or are you just using any shorts/t-shirt? Not sure if meant to be school-esque or not!

paisleyleaf · 06/07/2009 13:24

the PE kits must vary quite widely around the schools then
DD's is a particular colour polo shirt, navy shorts and black plimsoles.

(her preschool did a PE thing the other day where they all got themselves changed and she's been practicing drawstring bag opening and closing)

I worry about the dinners too, I read somewhere on here the other day about them being expected to carry a tray. I do hope not.

simpson · 06/07/2009 16:18

I have DS's start date

He starts on Thursday 17th Sept and will do 9-12 for 4 days and then 9-1.30 (stay for lunch) for 4 days then all day.

I do not get to stay with him for lunch but apparently there are loads of people who will help him.

Paisleyleaf - I am worried about them carrying a tray too....

On the PE kit front we should buy it from the school (so it has badge on) but think a lot of people just send their DCS in a polo top of the right colour iyswim. Which is fine unless they are in any school sporting team.

The shorts are burgundy so hard to get so just easier to get from school.

golgi · 06/07/2009 19:42

I will find things out next Friday when we go for our meeting. I am very very glad that I break up this week as otherwise I would miss son no. 1's induction day and son no. 2's nursery visit next week. I start back at school on his first day though, but we're only having a meetings day so I should be able to negotiate dropping him off first then going in late.
Not that boy cares, I think he'd rather have Grandma take him anyway!

Laughing at boy being expected to carry tray. Can you imagine a whole class of Receptioneers with trays? They'd better have understanding cleaners.

lollyheart · 07/07/2009 12:02

DD has her last visit today, at the previous visits its been in the school hall with tabels set up with activitys to do with all the children, but today she goes into her class and meets her teacher on her own, she is'nt really happy about me leaving her, she tends to cling to my leg so i'm hoping her teacher will take her from me.

lollyheart · 07/07/2009 12:03

tabels

lollyheart · 07/07/2009 12:04

Ive got labels on the brain i can spell reallytables

Aranea · 07/07/2009 12:13

Hello can I join?

DD will be 4.8 when she starts school in September and I'm feeling completely neurotic about it. Very high score on the mummy anxiety level!

Her school doesn't have uniform, so I can't even obsess about that as a displacement activity. There doesn't seem to be anything to organise really so all I can do is worry about whether she will make friends and be happy!

Her best friend at nursery is a year and a half younger so I think she's probably just a bit immature socially. As she is reluctant to go to nursery on the days when her friend isn't there, I'm worried in case she doesn't make a new friend and doesn't want to go to school!

On the plus side, I think we're OK re. toilet issues, she can dress herself (with much complaint and panicking that it's going wrong!) and is beginning to read.

Acinonyx · 07/07/2009 13:13

Dd's best friend at nursery is also younger and won't be going to school Dd is a bit of a baby emotionally and I do worry about her sitting alone and sad in a corner all playtime!

But hey - your dd can go to the toilet all by herself

Still no word from the specialist. He's probably in Acapulco all summer.

''Her school doesn't have uniform, so I can't even obsess about that as a displacement activity.'' This is absolutely my strategy. She must need something for school - bag, shoes? I'm sure you can find something to obsess over - try harder!

So much for my online shopping. Dd complained that she hadn't got to go to the shop with me and anyway some of the stuff doesn't fit so we're off to town tomorrow to try stuff on with no doubt some lunch and tea to fortify us Hmm, if we have lunch at John Lewis maybe dh will think it was a pinafore.....

PinkTulips · 07/07/2009 13:33

summer holidays are only 2 weeks in and already i'm starting to look forward to september... thank god for 2 weeks of summer camp form monday onwards... the 5 weeks after that may kill me though! the urchins haven't stopped attacking each other all week.

still awaiting cute labels, although the woven card i ordered for ds1's birthday arrived on friday so hopefully they're frantically weaving labels as we speak and they'll be here soon.

i tried dd's uniform on her yesterday (don't laugh, had been putting it off in some sort of state of denial) and she looks so weirdly grown up in it. she's delighted though and showed her best friend yesterday afternoon and is now anxiously awaitng her 'scrapbooks and diary' (workbooks and homework diary) as X has them already

Aranea · 07/07/2009 17:12

Well, Acinonyx, I suppose I sort of do have an obsession to focus on at the moment, but it doesn't feel as pleasing as school pinafores! Dd has some physical difficulties, and I'm attacking from every angle I can think of in an attempt to get her a bit more confident before September.

I was talking to her physiotherapist today and I am beginning to think we're going to end up with a diagnosis of dyspraxia. Only it's a bit odd as it doesn't extend to her fine motor skills, so her pen control is fine.

pinktulips I'm rather envious. Even though I actually in principle dislike uniform, I have an odd hankering to put dd in one! And she and I would both be very excited by receipt of workbooks & homework diary, but we don't seem to be getting anything like that in advance.
