Support for autistic child with social aspects of school

Does anyone have an autistic child who gets support with the social side of school. My little boy is alright in the classroom but he struggles with break times.

He has been bullied and is now struggling to go in. What sort of support would work in this situation?

My DD was allowed to go to the library at lunch time to read or colour if she didn't feel able to head out to the playground. There was another girl who did the same, and they ended up making friends. But the fact that she knew that she had another location to go to helped her get into school without a complete meltdown. She was given a buddy for breaktime by the teacher- but found this difficult as she couldn't cope with the play, so she ended up bringing a book outside instead. A few of the quieter children in the class liked this idea and joined her.

I also signed her up for lunchtime clubs (I think lower down the school these were football and choir) which helped hugely- she likes a structured activity, it enabled her to engage with the other children in a more structured way, and it also allowed her to have a clear plan for the day.

It is good that they have put something in place for your DD.

I did encourage DS to go to lunch time clubs but he likes to pace up and down at lunchtime so he didn’t want to do any of them.

Our school has an ELSA who provided a term of weekly sessions focusing on emotional regulation strategies as well as strategies for tricky social situations.

during break the library is always an option if dc wants a quieter environment.
