6 year old using the word ‘sigma’

RoeDeer86 · 19/10/2025 12:38

I’m sure many of us have seen Adolescence. It absolutely terrified me and has really made me think about the influences around my DS, who is 6. He came home from school and mentioned the word ‘sigma’ twice this weekend. I know it’s nothing he’s heard of seen at home (I keep the apps he has access to at age-appropriate levels and monitor what he watches), but he may have heard this at breakfast or after school club, where he mixes with older children. Has anyone else come across this? How are you handling it? I’m a millennial mum but I work with a lot of Gen-Z people and I’ve heard a lot of the terminology, so I feel quite alert to it. The question is how to deal with it. I think I’m going to mention it to the school as whilst these terms may be mentioned just because they’ve heard other people saying them, the meaning behind them is somewhat sinister and I worry for my DS and other children. Many thanks

You are over thinking this. It’s just a word.

Kindly, get used to it. You cannot control what he hears at school. Worry about what you can control.

ThreeCorners · 19/10/2025 16:43

What are the contexts he used it in? What did he say?

cuppacat · 19/10/2025 16:47

I agree with the PP - what context did he use it? Does he know what it means?

CosyMintFish · 19/10/2025 16:48

its a bit like skibidi or slay. Just ignore it, it is not anything to worry about

Gowlett · 19/10/2025 16:50

There’s a massively popular song “Sigma Boy”

My 5 year old sings it all the time. It’s in Russian.
But the chorus is “Sigma, sigma boy!”

It’s a bit like the “APT” song, kids just love it.
I still remember catchy tunes from my childhood.

BunfightBetty · 19/10/2025 16:52

They all say this (or did - it's on the wane now, where we are). It's just an innocent thing they pick up from each other and then parrot, while falling about laughing. As pp says, it's from the Sigma Boy song they'll all have been singing in the playground.

Buckle up, because these memes will be a feature of your life for some years ahead now.

There's nothing in and of itself about this word that suggests any nefarious influences, unless there are other factors you haven't mentioned.

Fitzcarraldo353 · 19/10/2025 17:05

Some of the children in your DC's class will have older siblings so you're never going to prevent this stuff filtering down. It's fairly harmless as a term these days and if it's reached 6 year olds then it's 'over' and the older ones will have moved on.

Is he going crazy every time someone says 'six seven' yet?

EuroTour · 19/10/2025 17:05

At least it's not sigma ligma. It's harmless. Nothing different to skibidi toilet or 67

Sunbeam18 · 19/10/2025 17:29

They all say 'what the sigma'; means nothing

intrepidpanda · 19/10/2025 17:53

I thought you were coming on to say your 6 year old is a maths genius.
I'm definitely not in with the young crowd.

Daphnedot · 19/10/2025 17:57

Wait till he starts saying 67 or six seven every 5 bloody minutes.

Exactly this.
They often won't have seen any memes or anything online just heard older ones or peers say it.
You could have the conversation at some point about not repeating words you don't know the meaning to although I personally would reserve that for some of the other things they come home saying
Please say the 6,7 thing is over its so tedious!

When I was at infant school we used to sing "Ooh, aah, I lost my bra, I left my knickers in my boyfriend's car!"

I can assure you none of us wore bras, let alone left any items of underwear anywhere, none of us had boyfriends and we didn't know anyone who had a car other than our parents!

Six year olds repeat daft stuff, it doesn't necessarily mean they understand the meaning behind it.

We used to sing this as well @BertieBotts !!

I'm so glad you reminded me, such fond memories.

I had no clue what any of it meant, it was just the slightly naughty thrill of using those words that made it so much fun.

It wasn't a gateway to teen promiscuity or anything like that. Totally innocent fun.

RoeDeer86 · 19/10/2025 19:46

Thanks everyone. I read a rather terrifying BBC article about the negative culture in a lot of schools (albeit they seemed to be secondary schools) and ran away with it a bit! I appreciate I can’t control what he hears in school though.

So, what did he say?

maudelovesharold · 19/10/2025 20:21

What does all of this mean and where does it come from? And how does everyone but me know about it?

I googled it and didn't come up with anything

arcticpandas · 19/10/2025 20:23

It doesn't mean anything to him. It's just a word he heard and that he repeats. My 12 year old said sigma and I asked what he meant and he showed me a funny meme where someone said it. As braindead as the brainrots he's in to.

Helpwithdivorce · 19/10/2025 20:24

Relax it’s just a word. My eldest now calls me bruh rather than mum.
They come out with all sorts. It’s all harmless

This has just shot memories of that song back into my head. My God why were we all singing that?? 😂

Was that the same song that also contained the immortal lyrics “my name is Elvis Presley, girls are sexy, sitting in the back seat drinking Pepsi”? For some reason I always associate the two, but they may just have been the same era.

The Sigma Meme is an internet joke that centers around the idea of the "sigma male" a type of person who is confident, quiet, independent, and doesn't follow social rules or try to lead others. He is often seen as a “lone wolf” who does his own thing and doesn't care what people think.

It comes from all the incel crap about Alpha, Beta and Omega males from yonks ago but has just evolved into being either praise (Alpha, Sigma) or insult (Beta, Omega).

ProfessorRizz · 19/10/2025 20:27

@maudelovesharoldlook up ‘Gen Alpha slang’. It’s the way kids under 16 talk these days.

LilyCanna · 19/10/2025 20:34

Anyone else’s kid stroke their cheek and pull a silly face for ‘sigma’?
