6 year old using the word ‘sigma’

RoeDeer86 · 19/10/2025 12:38

I’m sure many of us have seen Adolescence. It absolutely terrified me and has really made me think about the influences around my DS, who is 6. He came home from school and mentioned the word ‘sigma’ twice this weekend. I know it’s nothing he’s heard of seen at home (I keep the apps he has access to at age-appropriate levels and monitor what he watches), but he may have heard this at breakfast or after school club, where he mixes with older children. Has anyone else come across this? How are you handling it? I’m a millennial mum but I work with a lot of Gen-Z people and I’ve heard a lot of the terminology, so I feel quite alert to it. The question is how to deal with it. I think I’m going to mention it to the school as whilst these terms may be mentioned just because they’ve heard other people saying them, the meaning behind them is somewhat sinister and I worry for my DS and other children. Many thanks

I thought you were coming on to say your 6 year old is a maths genius.
I'm definitely not in with the young crowd.

Ha ha same!!!

Anyone else’s kid stroke their cheek and pull a silly face for ‘sigma’?

That's mewing. My 12 year old has the face down to a fine art. Technically mewing is to show off/highlight or else improve their (manly 🤣) jawline.

Ah yes you’re right, that’s how it started, but mine started doing it all the time for a while (because I told him to stop gurning at me 🤣)

What does all of this mean and where does it come from? And how does everyone but me know about it?

I think it all comes from social media stuff. But even if your kids aren’t on social media (like mine) they will pick it up from other kids, older kids.

Chickadee001 · 21/10/2025 04:11

No idea what it means apart from being a letter in the Greek alphabet!

I learned sigma by that age in phonics class it means a syllable.
Around 10 I learned the maths usage where sigma means the sum of all

The small letter sigma (σ) is used to represent standard deviation in math and statistics. It is also used to show syllable in linguistic, a shielding constant in chemistry and sum of divisors in math. The capital letter sigma (Σ) means to sum up in mathematics.

The only use of Sigma I learned too.

bobcat1987 · 21/10/2025 04:23

Wait to u meet 6 7

WallTree · 21/10/2025 05:18

Eh? It's not a rude word, it's just popukar lingo, like slay. You are wildly, wildly over reacting.

Disco2022 · 21/10/2025 05:31

OP I get it, it is predominantly linked to the categorising of male types in incel culture. I was pretty put out by my son saying it. I think one of things about this generation to consider is that their cultural references are often in meme form, free standing and they remain ignorant of the source. Whilst usually/previously I would have been an advocate of teaching them words have depth and meaning and refer to lots of things I actually think that these are really short lived and in many ways no reaction is the best reaction. (Whilst hopefully keeping yourself educated on the slang so that if anything truly concerning comes up you can challenge)

TroysMammy · 21/10/2025 06:00

I've only heard of Sigma 3, my DM had a lovely kitchen from them years ago.

borntobequiet · 21/10/2025 06:02

I read your post and thought the primary maths curriculum was getting a bit ambitious.

Wait till he starts saying 67 or six seven every 5 bloody minutes.

Currently on holiday with 11 and 14 year old boys.....67 is the bain of my life. I'm ready to abandon them and fly back Confused

Perfect28 · 21/10/2025 07:09

Sigma is not harmless, it's worrying how many people think it is?

Anonymous23456 · 21/10/2025 07:14

My kids say it. They are 5 and 6. It's just a phrase. It means what the heck. It's to show surprise or disbelief. It really isn't that deep. You need to relax.

ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird · 21/10/2025 07:42

Did anyone else's 70s childhood involve 'hilariously' chanting "All Day I Dream About Sex" at the (many many) boys whose schoolbags were Adidas football bags?

When I was at infant school we used to sing "Ooh, aah, I lost my bra, I left my knickers in my boyfriend's car!"

I can assure you none of us wore bras, let alone left any items of underwear anywhere, none of us had boyfriends and we didn't know anyone who had a car other than our parents!

Six year olds repeat daft stuff, it doesn't necessarily mean they understand the meaning behind it.

I remember someone on TV saying their dd was singing that and he asked his dd why knickers would have been left in the car and she said they were probably getting changed for ballet.

CoconutGrove · 21/10/2025 08:26

What is the 6 7 thing? My dc are young adults and I've not heard of it?

😂 So did I and probably worse - this was in the 1960s.

sigma
noun
sig·ma ˈsig-mə

1
: the 18th letter of the Greek alphabet see Alphabet Table
2
: standard deviation
3
slang : a person who is coolly self-assured, independent, and driven
Unlike alpha males and females who thrive on social dominance, sigmas prefer solitude and operate outside of traditional social hierarchies.—Gayathri Kallukaran

—often used before another noun
a sigma male/female

What terrible thing do you think will happen if an innocent child says this word? Tell him it's a Greek letter which is true. The fad will soon end anyway.

When I was in school we sang
Oo ah Cantona, cries like a baby and wears a bra

Perfect28 · 21/10/2025 09:16

Again more missing the point. It's not about the fact that it's a catchy trending phrase, it's about the steady creep of the manpsphere that it represents.

Sure don't make a big deal to your kid but we should absolutely all be concerned about this and actively challenge it's core tenets with our kids.

WorkCleanRepeat · 21/10/2025 11:05

Just ignore it. Both of mine come out with silly playground slang all the time.

But my 10 year old boy also asked when the elf was coming yeaterday so I dont think its turning them in to gangland thugs just yet

Perfect28 · 21/10/2025 07:09

They're not saying it's harmless, they are saying that a 6yo doesn't attach the deeper meaning to it that an older child might - they are just repeating something that is being said in the playground.

Boomboombo · 21/10/2025 16:27

Sigma, giga chad, 67, technological these are just random words kids be saying in

Gowlett · 21/10/2025 22:04

I don’t even know what sigma means…
And I know lots of words! Don’t worry.
