My daughter is doing well in school especially literacy. Not so sure about math. What year would you say this math homework is targeted for?

I’d say y2 or y3

fashionqueen0123 · 09/02/2025 22:28

I’d say year 3. My daughter was doing much harder stuff in year 5!

CestLaVie123 · 09/02/2025 22:29

Totally depends what set

I was going to say Y4 until I saw the less-than and greater-than. Y5.

Less than and greater than are taught in KS1. I currently teach year 2/3 and my year 2s are very confident with this. It's in the Y2 curriculum.

The maths skills here are all Year 2 (even the fractions are simple). And yes...they would be expected to be able to read the word problems. As homework though, I'd not send such a sheet home...it's very lazy and not what they'd be working on...it's too random! Too many different themes. Eg this week we are doing measures...converting units...so I'd send home a related homework task. Next week we move on to statistics so I'll send home a statistics based task. The teacher in this case has just picked a random page in a VERY old maths book with no thought. Lazy.

Fwiw I think question A2 may be wrong - is that a + or a ÷?

mathanxiety · 09/02/2025 22:45

2nd or 3rd grade in US.

Though there would be more text based problem questions and you'd be required to explain your reasoning.

I thought I recognised the format.

what a waste of time though. My y1 child could do 15+5 in her head and probably the money ones, and a few others. Yet there’s one asking what 4x 8 1/2 is, in a word problem. There is not a child on the planet who needs to be practice both those questions! Some will be either far too easy or far too hard. And this is wayyyyy below the level of the y6 SATS papers.

Agree - this is a crazy mish mash.

TipsyBlueOtter · 09/02/2025 22:54

Looks like DS's year 3 questions, but it's way too much of it all in one go.

gynaeissue · 09/02/2025 22:57

It’s a jumble because it’s differentiated. Section A is meant to be the easiest and C the hardest

Sadtosaythis · 09/02/2025 22:58

Year 3

I think it's sectioned by what type of question they are.

I'm going with old curriculum Y3 or Y4. Most of it is below Y3 level but it isn't all strictly Y2. Suggestions of Y5 are laughable.

ellenpartridge · 09/02/2025 23:04

Year 3

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 23:05

yr 3

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 23:06

i struggle with some of dc's yr 5 maths! 😆

bellsbuss · 09/02/2025 23:07

Year 2 or 3 going my child's homework

Lindtnotlint · 09/02/2025 23:13

Schofield and Sims for year 3, maybe easy end of year 4. It is NOT at a year 5 level.

TheMeasure · 09/02/2025 23:28

I've got all those old Schofield and Sims books somewhere in my study. Will have a look in the morning if you like and see if I can match the page here to one of them to give you the year it's aimed at.

threestars · 09/02/2025 23:32

Year 3.

Happyhettie · 09/02/2025 23:40

Year 2 or 3. The idea that Year 5 and doing maths at that low level is ridiculous. They do awful things like convert mixed numbers to improper fractions, simplify ratio, multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits. Although I bet lots of year 5 pupils and teachers wish it was that easy!!!

L0bstersLass · 09/02/2025 23:49

Year 2 or 3. An average seven year old should be able to ace that.

BlueWhippetsForever · 09/02/2025 23:49

I'm surprised at the suggestions that's Year 5?! The maths is very very basic. I'd say stretch year 2 or average year 3. At most.

DragonFly98 · 09/02/2025 23:53

Year 2

confusedlots · 09/02/2025 23:55

Yes I'm surprised at the suggestions on here too. My 7 year old would be able to do those, although might struggle with 1 or 2 of the fraction ones. It is very similar to homework my 8 year old would get, but she generally finds her homework easy and I'd prefer her to have a few more challenging questions included.

sageGreen81 · 10/02/2025 00:01

That's Schofield and Sims! God we hate it goes up to book 6 not sure what year this one is!

My Daughter is year 5 top set at a prep school they do book 5 which is this one, goes all the way to book 6.

Oh and it's mental arithmetic put it this way for some kids this is a walk in the park. It's astonishing how good some of them are at maths. They tend to do book 6 in Year 6. That's hard going lol
