My daughter is doing well in school especially literacy. Not so sure about math. What year would you say this math homework is targeted for?

Year 2/3

The content is all taught in year 2. I can tell this because all of the numbers are within 100, and fractions are limited to half, quarter and three quarters.

The exception, weirdly, is 4x8, which I taught with the four times table in the year three curriculum.

However, it would only be accessible for a very skilled child, particularly the fraction questions. If dd did complete this and is in year two or three, she's very skilled at applying the learning taught.

I teach year 2 and agree with this. Most of my year 2 children could access this by the end of the year but would need help applying and understanding the processes required by the questions.

It's from a Schofield and sims mental arithmetic book.

(I'm a maths teacher)

They are usually used in ks2 to develop understanding of word problems as there is a series of 6 mental arithmetic books which slowly go up in complexity of both maths and language.

Not usually used in ks1 as they tend to focus on ks2 content.

Can also be used in secondary to keep up mental maths skills.

From the size of the writing and the content that is book 3,4 or 5. So it's at expected level for year 5 or slightly below for year 6.

I thought I recognised the format.

what a waste of time though. My y1 child could do 15+5 in her head and probably the money ones, and a few others. Yet there’s one asking what 4x 8 1/2 is, in a word problem. There is not a child on the planet who needs to be practice both those questions! Some will be either far too easy or far too hard. And this is wayyyyy below the level of the y6 SATS papers.

LostittoBostik · 09/02/2025 21:46

Year 2 or 3.

This is easier than my Y3's work and she's considered to be not meeting expectations in maths. Incidentally I also think the expectations are ludicrous

Gymmum82 · 09/02/2025 21:49

Based on my y4 and 6 children’s homework I would say year 2 as it’s quite far below their current levels

bluesky45 · 09/02/2025 21:51

It's Def not y2, the multiplication and division in the first section is way too complex for y2, where the national curriculum only states 2, 5 and 10 times tables

That could potentially be used in a lower maths set in secondary as well. Attainment in maths varies hugely by that age.

(Wandering from the point)

I used to be given Schofield and Sims books to teach from in the late 1970s. To check if I’d remembered that correctly I googled “Schofield and Sims” and opened a pdf of a random page from First Mental Arithmetic 4.

They don’t seem to have updated them much, especially if this is typical - click on screenshots. Mum is 39 and Alice is 19.
So, Mum gave birth to Alice when she was 20.

Thank you! I will look for those books.

I buy my kids the CGP workbooks and these look like the questions my daughter gets in the year 3 book so my guess is Y3

Whatever it is, it doesn't seem very well aligned with current year group expectations. There's a right jumble of stuff across two key stages.
