What shoes do your DDs wear to school in summer?

Was gob-smacked to be told by DDs reception teacher that summer shoes must be closed of toe and flexible of sole. Latter sensible of course and former due to 'health and safety' . Swallowed my usual fogeyish rant about not knowing how we survived our childhood, what with the reckless wearing of open-toed sandals etc etc.... SO do they basically just wear their hefty black winter shoes for summer too or is there something a bit lighter that doesn't break the rules?

when we were at school 'sandals' meant these or similar

RosaLuxembourg · 06/05/2008 14:27

Mine wear shoes similar to the link MrsB posted. Open toed shoes really are dangerous in the playground - lots of tripping injuries.

largeginandtonic · 06/05/2008 14:27

Dd is about to get these this afternoon. She is 7.

TartanKnickers · 06/05/2008 14:28

My DD wears a pair of white leather mary jane typer shoes from Clarks with her school dresses.

popmum · 06/05/2008 14:29

my dd has SUNNY SUE JNR by clarks, which seemed to be a good cross.
However loads in her class seem to be doing white sandals (am hoping dd doesn't notice!)

AgonyBeetle · 06/05/2008 14:30

Dd2 has these or something very like them in red. Or she wears crocs. But her school is very free and easy in this respect.

charliecat · 06/05/2008 14:33

dds wear bhs versions of these
at the moment, and then swap into doodles of various colour and they get moaned at every day by the teachers...
Those ballet shoe things are very popular but i think they look horrid.

TigerFeet · 06/05/2008 14:33

DD not yet primary but wears shoes similar to those in the links in the summer, although this years have a strap without a t bar.

I have a thing about open toed shoes, perhaps my one nod towards overprotectiveness, my feet were forever falling out of my Jesus sandals and I would go arse over tit at frequent intervals

LIZS · 06/05/2008 14:34

dd wears same sumer and winter - Bolero by Startrite

Sparkletastic · 06/05/2008 14:43

Ah well - DD is in her black Eliza Startrites already so basically it is the same old but thanks ladies. Am sad at lack of colourful summer shoe shopping experience (although am a mite tempted by Crocs Agonybeetle - although never for myself you understand ) mainly for my own sake.... Have forced DD2 into new sandals from Clarks today although the thankless tike seems to hate them and keeps heading for her chavvy white Pumas that her dad got her .

Dd has to wear black closed toe shoes or sandals. Eminently sensible I would have thought.

Anchovy · 06/05/2008 15:19

I used to agree with you about the "ooh, in my day we all wore open sandals" thing, but when Ds was in nursery, one of the little 4 year old girls went absolutely flying having caught the front of her shoe in the playground and had a very badly grazed/swollen face.

The teacher said it always happened at least once per summer term and they have tightened up quite a lot on what the children can wear in nursery.

sunnydelight · 07/05/2008 05:24

My kids have to wear proper black lace up school shoes Summer and Winter which I find really puzzling as we're in Oz and it gets pretty damn hot. At our previous school the rule was "closed toe sandals".

kid · 07/05/2008 06:39

DD tends to wear anything she wants, I draw the line at flipflops though! Her school are very relaxed about school uniform.
Most of the boys wear trainers, the girls wear a variety of footwear.

lizziemun · 07/05/2008 06:45

DD1 is at nursery and she wear either some canvas trainers or 'doodles' type shoes.

Butkin · 08/05/2008 12:54

DD wears Clarks Daisy Rose for school this Summer.

nix66 · 08/05/2008 13:21

My dd is wearing her red crocs today (I know some mumsnetters hate them but she doesn't and says they are very comfortable..)

We have just voted at our governors' meeting to not allow Crocs for school wear - not that great for running in. And we are a bunch of stick-in-the-muds.

nix66 · 08/05/2008 13:38

What a pain SG.. my dd has never had a problem running in them as they aren't too big (which seems to be how people are wearing them )

flatmouse · 08/05/2008 13:43

It never crossed my mind to think about "summer shoes". School shoes are school shoes in my mind! Black/navy depending on uniform requirements.

Flipflops, open toed, fashion shoes, crocs (urghh), lelli kelli (and if i hear about these ONCE more!) etc are for at home, not at school.

pagwatch · 08/05/2008 14:00

my DD has black standard shoes for school. Same shoes all years round. No exceptions. School rules.
Not a problems at all IMO

gabbyfemale · 08/05/2008 14:19

my dds school let her wear trainers - I thought she would be too hot but the school ay that the grip is much better when they are running about.
