Maybe some of them are doing it so they can avoid excruciating small talk with other parents 😂
Do they filter down to the school yard after stubbing out?

Invisimamma · 08/02/2024 18:41

It's grim. Poor role modelling.

Why not ask if the school will take part in a smoke-free school gates campaign? They did it in schools near us, the older kids learned about the dangers or smoking, then invited parents in to do a little presentation about what they'd learned and designed banners that were printed and hung on the school railings asking parents not to smoke around the school.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/02/2024 18:44

I just feel sorry for them.

Imagine being so badly in the grip of an addiction that you can’t even wait until your children are in bed in the evening.

More help and support needs to be available.

I'm an ex-smoker. Have to say it's not something I've ever seen. Is it a common occurrence?

I've seen one parent vape as they were walking 10/15m on the path in to school but that's it. All in about 7 years ?!

Chickpea17 · 08/02/2024 19:52

Outside school gates let them get on with it

What's your opinion on it?

Yeah you go first OP

Notts90 · 08/02/2024 19:54

Grim.

HurrahWuff · 08/02/2024 20:19

That sounds grim. I can't think that I've ever seen a single parent smoking anywhere near school and I've been picking up kids from the same (large primary) school for the past 23 years!

GeanMirls · 08/02/2024 20:22

Totally grim.

Mind you, there's a couple of wrong'uns who collect their KS1 child from our local village primary high as a kite, so I guess it's all relative...

ohdamnitjanet · 08/02/2024 20:24

Couldn’t care less. It’s two seconds of walking by.

YouJustDoYou · 08/02/2024 20:24

I think it's a very selfish thing to subject everyone having to pass through their clouds of stink and poison to. One of the dads was standing there today right at the main entrance, puffing away as the kids were walking through his effing smoke clouds. Prick.

CutiePatooties · 08/02/2024 20:26

I think it’s unnecessary. I’ve been a smoker and a vaper (only been nicotine free for a month and a half) and I’ve never smoked outside of a school gate. It’s not like you’re at the school for long… have one at home in your garden before you leave to collect the children or have one once you get back.

Other parents have to walk their children through the smoke, smell it, inhale it and it doesn’t make the school look good.

ColleenDonaghy · 08/02/2024 20:28

Grim, but they're in a public place doing something that's legal.

Also something I've never noticed.

Veggie1961 · 08/02/2024 20:30

As a smoker I think it’s awful. It would never occur to me to smoke anywhere apart from our back garden. It really is anti social and a poor example for the children coming out of school seeing parents smoking.

WhamBamThankU · 08/02/2024 20:33

Do you mean when children are present? Or while you're waiting to be allowed onto grounds? Either way, I think it's worse when you see nurses/paramedics etc smoking on the wall outside the hospital. Wouldn't want a smoky nurse treating my child etc.

Snugglemonkey · 08/02/2024 20:45

I have never seen it. It is grim though.

And you have made the school staff aware of this, yes? Or reported it yourself?

Is there not a close handover? (I'm really hoping the teacher just isn't aware)

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 08/02/2024 21:10

I don't like it. At DD's old school, parents weren't allowed through the gates in the mornings so you had to all congregate outside the gates so that when they opened at 8:30, your child could go straight into their classroom without being late. And there was always a group of mums smoking with all the children around.
At her new school it's less of an issue because the gate opens 10 mins before school starts so you don't have a big group of children all standing around at the gates with any smokers. I've never actually seen anyone smoking outside this school, presumably because there's less need to stand around outside the school grounds in the morning.

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/02/2024 16:09

Selfish and unnecessary. If you can’t manage outside the school for a short while, it’s sad, I think.

Then again, I’ve seen people smoking outside hospitals, right by the No Smoking banners.

Sorry mid read that, thought you meant use to smoke cigarettes outside school gates.. god really? Thought that would be banned

mummyrolling2014 · 23/06/2024 01:01

As an ex smoker I was very private about it and was thoroughly ashamed of anyone finding out. I never smoked in front of family or the children, hence why I stopped (health reasons too of course!) I just knew people would automatically judge me. A few of my closest mummy friends I told and they were so shocked saying 'you don't look like a smoker' and I would think 'what does a smoker look like??' This shows that they judge what kind of people smokers are. Because I have a well respected job and seem very prim and proper, I knew it never fitted in to my image. Unfortunately for that reason even when I did smoke I would also turn my nose up in disgust at mums smoking outside the gate because they shouldn't do it in front of children going to school and also as an ex smoker, I know they can wait 5 mins when they get home!

Bazinga007 · 23/06/2024 01:25

It's grim and disgusting. I don't want to inhale their exhaled smoke. Just try and hold your breath as you go past with the knowledge that you are.blessed to not be as weak as them.

CreateUserNames · 23/06/2024 12:26

pretty unpleasant, just like ppl smoke in kids playground too!
