Ok so to be brief my year 2 dd has just got her results. 99 for reading which teacher assessment took to 100 to pass.
However my dd has always been one of the best readers, flew through reception, ended in turquoise band, the school in year one put the whole class back to green band so all learning the same sounds, wasn’t happy about this but what can you do? Phonics screening was 39 and always exceeding at literacy till this.

You asked for practical suggestions: I asked what books she was reading at home? I’d add to that by asking what books you are reading to her?

We read anything and everything. Last night she read a child’s book about David Attenborough and then we looked through a kids thesaurus together and right now she’s on my iPad reading the lyrics to Katy Perry’s roar!

She doesn’t have any issues with maths, that was an example of other children.
Having slept on this I’m convinced she isn’t being treated fairly. Her friend who’s reading has just clicked, has been moved up to lime just recently, she skipped a couple of book bands, is gd how is that possible?

The teacher says she’s working very hard, concentrates well. She is bright but definitely doesn’t have a love of learning!! If I do things at home with her she can’t finish fast enough and getting her to read is like pulling teeth!

Is it possible that she is rushing her work at school, trying to finish fast? Not giving it her best effort?
One of my DC does this, the teachers working on getting him to spend longer doing his work and I'm doing the same at home. Lots of reminders it's important to do a good job, not a fast one, both at school and at home. We've been doing 10 minutes work a couple of times a week and focusing on letters needing to be readable not rushed, for him the issue is with his writing and him getting his words on paper. The teacher said he does much better answering verbally rather than writing. Some children have trouble getting their thoughts on to paper. We don't really focus on grades, the import thing is if he's trying and working hard, which he wasn't with English.

It's up to the school. Some are still grouped by ability in year 3 and during the whole primary education. The children will be placed in different sets, often at the beginning of a new year, but can then be moved during the year.

I doubt she would be treated unfairly and you do not know anything about the other dc. Perhaps the parent suddenly decided to make an effort and the dc made a big improvement. I was very relaxed with my dc reading early on and we did not do their reading book daily until I felt they were ready for it. We spent more time playing outside in the park, doing sport, art etc. I felt like what is the rush to make a child read so much from age 4, when some just are not ready. I always read to them daily and perhaps twice a week we would look at the school reading books and they would read (but not so fluently). But come year 2 dc were ready so we focused on reading daily more from school reading books and reading for pleasure. My ds jumped book bands and became GDS (dd was the same, but was ready for reading a little earlier). I did not want my ds to not like reading if I kept forcing him when he was younger. So I kept it relaxed. And just because a dc starts out strong does not mean others won't catch up or they will continue to be super strong. My dd has a friend that started out very strong in reading and was WAY ahead of all the other dc for reading in year 1 and 2. Then suddenly stalled and everyone else caught up. Now struggles with reading comprehension. I would not worry so much about getting your dd to GDS, she is probably feeling your stress and she is such a young age. Just continue to support her and make it fun.

This may very well be unfair but what I take from that is your home reading strategy is a bit bitty. By the time they’re on lime, there are plenty of home reading options. It’s easy to sniff at Rainbow Magic but they’re popular for a reason and you can probably find big collections online for a song. Build 15 minutes (rising to 30 minutes) of solo reading time into her bedtime routine, after stories with you. Don’t be tempted to move too far too fast with the stories you’re reading to her - choose interesting picture books which pose questions about character development / dilemmas. This will build her critical appreciation skills. And obviously also read the school book every night.

Have you asked for a meeting about her results?

notahappybunny7 · 20/07/2023 10:04

Yes, teacher says she has potential, knows she can do it but didn’t preform on the day.
surely she could of overrode that with her teacher assessment?
I say does she concentrate,? Oh yes, works very hard .
we shall have to up the reading as much as possible I suppose.

The teacher has overrode the sats results to give your daughter EXP. It sounds as though the other child scored very highly on the reading papers and needed their reading book level adjusting to match current attainment.

I would speak to the teacher, explain you were surprised at her score and grading and were wondering what specific areas your daughter needs to work on.

ILookAtTheFloor · 20/07/2023 10:33

How did she do with writing? That's purely teacher assessment but very very difficult to get GD in. I asked for my daughter's KS1 scaled scores as we weren't even given them, she got 115 for both maths and reading.

Expected at writing which she finds more tricky.

Writing was expected but she absolutely struggles with neatness and there’s a fair bit of letter reversal that they’ve been working on in school.

Writing is very very difficult to get GD in, the standard is so high, they're only 7!

It sounds like your daughter just had a bad day doing the tests themselves. If I was very concerned I'd engage a tutor but to be honest probably wouldn't until about Year 5 if things haven't changed. They do progress at different rates, not linear!

What do you mean by interesting experiences??

Anything and everything can be interesting at this age! Nature in the local park. The age of different buildings in the high street, including bits that were bombed and then rebuilt after the war (obviously depending where you live). The seasons. Music on the radio. Just talk about everything and engage her and imagination.
