Can you give me photo examples if possible, but if not just describe what it's like? I'm trying to work out if DS is behind.

School haven't said anything in particular but it looks so messy to me, with many spelling mistakes.

thank you!

My summer born year 3 son also struggles with writing and is behind in this area.
The teacher said it isn't content, he has all the ideas and language, but it's the technicalities and handwriting he struggles with.
I do worry about it, but am hoping that as he gets older it will come more easily. And that's an interesting point about cursive not being important in high school.

That looks fine to me OP. I have a Y3 boy and his writing seems to get smaller and smaller! I can barely read it any more but his teacher seems to like it! Trip to specsavers for me I think!

I have a winter born year 3 DS and his writing is just like your son's, OP. Although I have noticed it's getting smaller of late and he said 'that's how I like writing; it's part of my personality and you can't change that' 😂

Wow @ThisMustBeMyDream your sons writing is beautiful. I'm surprised he's not beyond meeting expectations. Thank you for the example. My sons is nowhere near that near!!

My son is meeting expectations and is now where near as good at writing.

Also I work in secondary, there is much less emphasis on cursive there which often makes a huge difference to those who struggle, especially boys. In fact for those with handwriting issues (and I'm talking illegible here!) they are actively encouraged not to write in cursive. It's unbelievable how much difference it makes!

However as DS was taught cursive from the start he can’t print at all so we’re stuck with his messy cursive. His brain just can’t undo all the squiggles.

I'd say definitely working at. In terms of spellings, he's just missing out a few sounds (eg. un-I-form). In others, he's making a good attempt to spell using his phonic knowledge (eg. Relacks), which is key. I'm sure his teacher is doing regular spellings with him at school - just keep it up with him at home. He's doing well!

My year 3 son's writing is awful. He is below average for writing according to his school report. His teacher says he rushes but even when he doesn't it is illegible. His year 1 brother has clearer handwriting.
I think it would help him if he didn't have to do joined up writing but that's not allowed. I can understand why though.

Better than my year 3 boys writing!

ThisMustBeMyDream · 01/04/2023 11:50

I think your boys isn't that dissimilar to what I posted from my yr3 son tbh! I'd be more than happy with that!
It isn't the actual writing that means they get greatest depth as such. It is the content. When they talk about greater depth in handwriting it is probably misleading.
And yes, I strongly encourage my older child not to write in cursive as it is illegible mostly. You can read it if he prints it, but school want it cursive for speed! They all find their own style when the leave primary!
This is my yr 5 when he prints!

I'm a year 3 teacher and his writing is pretty similar to my boys. How much of that spelling is independent?

ilkleymoorbartat · 01/04/2023 12:48

Thanks @NCTDN All thats independent work. It was a piece of homework set but the school but he did it entirely on his own.

If that's independent spelling then he's way ahead of most of my year 3 class!!

ilkleymoorbartat · 02/04/2023 10:21

Thanks for your knowledge @NCTDN

We'll just keep plugging away with what we're doing. I think we've spent so long worrying how he's doing throughout lockdown and subsequently that It's become my go to response to anything he does.

School flag focus as an issue, but I guess I need to start seeing the big picture a bit more.

Really appreciate everyone's input!
