How behind is my daughter? Year one.

She’s in year one, but she is an older one. Six soon. She’s reading blue band fairly capably and I think she’s doing ok ish in maths. I’d say she is probably average to slightly below average ability overall but she has had - as they all have - pandemic disruption, periods of isolation and she wouldn’t do much with me at home so I think she is more behind than she might have been.

She wrote this independently- froo is through 🙄 and the last sentence says ‘He sinks in the water.’
Oh and scwishee is squishy. Apparently in the story the bus arrives in a sparkly present? I have read the book but cannot remember it.

Her brother is much more able than her and I know they all have their ‘ceiling’ but I am concerned that she is going to fall further behind.

‘She’s not as behind as I thought’

No OP the only person behind is you - maybe you need some remedial comprehension activities because so many people, including teachers have said she’s not behind AT ALL.

I’m a TA in Y2. I’d be more than happy with that in my class let alone in Y1.

Fuck me.
-Your son won't "not do well In life" because he has ASD.
-Your daughter is not "failing year one".
-Your eye rolling at her "mistake" is hideous - at year one, they are taught to spell phonetically as to help with reading. Spellings don't start in our school until year two.
-Your comparisons of your children are disgusting. And you compliment one and then in the next sentence mention something else they are rubbish at. Their self esteems must be completely shot.
-Your username is horrible.
-Your daughter is 5 years old.
-No, she "isn't as behind as you thought she'd be" - you aren't hearing anything anyone is saying to you at all.
You come across horrible. Seriously sort yourself out

OP you child has been referred to hospital for eyes as opposed to a standard optician? They could be quite bad. Poor kid won't do well if she can't see.
Why have you got such a downer on them?

@bizboz

I teach year 2 and would say that's absolutely fine for Autumn term of Year 1, especially given the disrupted reception year. Blue book band is also fine for this stage in Year 1.
Hi sorry to do this but I don't get any feedback from my girl's scary teacher! Please would you mind giving me your thoughts on my Year 2's writing? The only feedback I've had is at the beginning of the year which was that the teacher is NOT happy with it! GinThanks

@Failingyearone

Yes she failed the school eye test they have. That’s how the form phrased it ‘failed eye test’ She has reduced vision in both eyes.

I will see if glasses help her.
At least she doesn’t seem to be as behind as I thought she might be.

Alright. What else do they say about her? Is she kind? Does she have friends? Does she like to draw? Make things? From her writing she has a lovely little imagination does she like to make up stories?

You are in very real danger of creating, as PP's have said, a self fulfilling prophecy. The most positive thing you've said on this thread about a five year old girl, is that she's not as behind 'as you thought'. Its desperately sad.

Side note: how does everyone know what the colour bands mean on the reading books? Blush I have no idea what order they go in ..or what colours are appropriate for what year group.

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 30/11/2021 18:40

(Appropriate is probably the wrong word to use but hopefully you get what I mean)

Hi, just Google reading book bands and lots of tables will pop up, but do take them with a pinch of salt as they change over time.

Thank you! I'll save that 😁

mulberrybag5 · 30/11/2021 22:46

They all have a cieling? Only the one you impose on them.

Cornishclio · 30/11/2021 22:54

It looks similar to my granddaughters work and she is in year 1 and aged 6. It looks fine. What is more worrying is you think she isn't very bright and is failing. Please don't let her pick up on that.

Mammyloveswine · 30/11/2021 23:03

Teacher here.. I'm a reception teacher but trays perfect for this stage in year 1!!

EmmaOvary · 01/12/2021 09:22

She is 5. In many countries, she wouldn't even be at school yet, play would be her primary source of development.

Don't be THAT mother.
