Am I over reacting?

'Good Afternoon,,

Please see attached the work S completed, after A LOT of effort from me to get him started.

It is becoming physically and mentally draining for me to get him to work.

I am also attaching the work completed by another child. The presentation and level of effort between the two is clearly visible.

I appreciate your continued support in this matter.'

My son is a young Y2, is high average to above in reading and maths but has always struggled with writing.

AIBU to think the teacher is being out of order here. I am upset by her comments

Gosh that is harsh....wouldn't be impressed with a teacher comparing my child's work with another one at all.
Has he/she actually spoken to you to let you know there is an issue?

driftcompatible · 05/11/2021 20:25

Wow that's so unprofessional! I rarely ever comment snd need to here. I would certainly complain. If she's physically and mentally exhausted from doing her damn job she needs to consider working in another profession. Maybe it's her lazy ass attitude he is struggling with and preventing him from getting motivated. The irony of this lol.

'Your son is slow to get started on things - it's taxing' aka 'he is lazy but I'm more lazy'

As for attaching another child's work - nope. That's so over the line.

Smileyduck · 05/11/2021 20:27

Yes we have spoken but it was only on Monday that she was telling me how well he was working these days and how he had 'turned over a new leaf'. I'm pretty certain he dyslexic and committing anything to paper is a big deal for him. Actually he got it all right compared to the other child who did not.

I’m a primary teacher and wouldn’t dream of sending another child’s work home to a parent! So unprofessional! The comment about being physically and mentally drained is totally out of order too. I’d be furious to receive that note.

2019user44 · 05/11/2021 20:32

That is ridiculously unprofessional. I would ask for an immediate meeting with the head and would consider Flagging with the Governors and ofsted. It is completely inappropriate and worrying !

titchy · 05/11/2021 20:32

Wow!

Dear Ms Teacher

If you are finding encouraging neatness in a 7 year old physically and mentally exhausting perhaps you should consider leaving teaching.

titchy · 05/11/2021 20:33

Seriously I'd forward to the head and ask for a meeting.

WhatHaveIDone21 · 05/11/2021 20:36

I'm a Y2 teacher and I would say there are lots of children who are producing similar work to that in my class. I would say the neater version is the exception rather than the rule.

Remember they have missed big chunks of school and I feel this age have missed out particularly on things like handwriting. I was in UKS2 last year and definitely feel the younger ones have suffered more.

soapboxqueen · 05/11/2021 20:40

I'm absolutely gobsmacked.

Massively unprofessional.

If the teacher feels there are issues that she cannot solve herself, the first stop should be asking for advice from other teachers while keeping you informed. Not essentially whinging at you.

She should not be sharing the impact on her of your child's learning.

She should not be sharing another child's work.

She should not be comparing your child's work with another child to make a point.

I'd ask to speak to either the year or key stage lead in the first instance.

MakeWayMoana · 05/11/2021 20:40

I came on thinking you were probably being unreasonable... but that is awful!! He’s 6 years old! If she’s saying that to you imagine how she’s making him feel in the classroom... I would be arranging a meeting to discuss this with the head

Bunnycat101 · 05/11/2021 20:42

He got the sums he did all right. Surely he should have had some praise for that with perhaps and ask to work on presentation. That teacher just sounds cutting.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 05/11/2021 20:43

Her comments are horrendous.

She would have torn strips off my DS’s work (dyslexia and inattentive adhd - neither of which were diagnosed at that age).

Lougle · 05/11/2021 20:44

Child 2 got question 6 wrong. Just saying...

I would be furious and I can't believe the head teacher would agree with this at all.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 05/11/2021 20:45

Yes and the fact that the teacher prefers neat to correct answers is more than a tad concerning.

The ‘physically and mentally draining’ is incredibly unprofessional.

Nuffaluff · 05/11/2021 20:46

That’s awful. I’m a year 3 teacher and I would never do that.
Also, there is nothing wrong with your son’s handwriting. Year 2 is so very young. My son’s handwriting is similar and he’s one of the oldest. It’s hard to write the numbers inside the boxes.
Complain.

Rainbowunicorn76 · 05/11/2021 20:47

Wow all of that is incredibly unprofessional and I'd be taking it to the head. It sounds like the teacher needs some "guidance" to put it nicely!!

Mollymalone123 · 05/11/2021 20:48

I would go straight to headteacher over this.I cannot fathom why the teacher thought any of her letter was appropriate!

rrhuth · 05/11/2021 20:49

That deserves a formal complaint.

Whatever the reason for it, that teacher needs a complete rethink - either of their approach or their career.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 05/11/2021 20:52

“Good afternoon. I attach the comments about a child’s work given by a another teacher. As can be seen the difference in professionalism and effort is clearly visible. I appreciate your support in this matter.”

GertietheGherkin · 05/11/2021 20:53

This is so, so unprofessional. You need to ask for a meeting with the Head and take a copy of the Teachers' comments ( make sure you keep a copy!)

Your poor Son, if she is bold enough to write that on a note home, I'd be worried about unprofessional behaviour in her classroom too. One child is supposedly mentally and physically draining her? I'd be wanting such comments looked into as a matter of safeguarding.
She's definitely in the wrong profession!

RAOK · 05/11/2021 20:53

Ask to see the Headteacher on Monday morning. This is completely unprofessional and unacceptable.

Smileyduck · 05/11/2021 20:53

Dear Teacher

Clearly I wasn't in the lesson. This was a maths lesson. I see 2 pieces of work - one child has them all right, the other doesn't. We know S struggles with fine motor control and letter formation - you have put him on the SEN register this week for it. It is unreasonable to expect him to be presenting the same as the other piece. Personally, as a maths teacher, I can see which piece shows the better grasp of multiplication.

Best wishes

This was my knee jerk response, I wish I had waited and thought about it some more.

LethargicActress · 05/11/2021 20:54

You’re not over reacting. I’ve seen much messier work from plenty of brilliant Y2’s, especially at this stage in the year. That email is incredibly unprofessional and the head needs to see it.

Tenfifteen · 05/11/2021 20:57

This is ridiculous and unprofessional. My son is having a dyslexia assessment his writing is the same if not less clear he will invert letters he finds spelling near impossible. He had a teacher assistant tell him he was being lazy as he has a v wide vocabulary and is good at maths and writing was easier.

Im quite cross about the ignorance, but this is a whole new level. What totally inappropriate cuntiness even if you really thought that about a young child, how foolish enough to write it down. I would definitely contact the headteacher as she has been completely unprofessional. I’d also want assurances about support for DC - if a teacher can’t be bothered to teach and finds it a burden then what is the plan?

Tenfifteen · 05/11/2021 20:58

*I should have said “writing is easier apparently”. Ie this was the illogical statement from the TA not what I think!
