Should my DS have moved book bands or do they stay the same as reception ?

DS is in year 1 now and bringing home yellow band reading books. I have told the teacher they are too easy now, but it hasn't been changed. Obviously it's only a few weeks in, so does he need assessing or how do they change book bands ? The main issue is him bringing the same books he's read before over and over. He says it's boring. He has one biff & chip yellow band one this weekend with only 3 words each page. He can do a bit more.

I've just realised something, it could be coincidence. Do the Oxford levels correlate to the phonics sets?
Loosely. You can Google comparison charts to compare your scheme with ORT levels and book band colours, and find the right equivalent. I spent a huge amount of time peering at them during the school closures to make sure the Biff/Chip, Songbirds etc I was buying matched DCs' RWI level! Oxford have recently made everything really confusing though, by restyling the books sold to parents as 'Read with Oxford'. A 'stage 5' in those is equivalent to ORT 8-10, IIRC 🤯 However, they have a really useful assessment tool on their website if you're unsure and want to buy your own books for home.

We're all agreed this 'system' is ridiculous, right?

Definitely. My daughter is Y2 but in all three years so far we've found that the books they send home have absolutely no correlation with what she is capable of reading. We've queried it a few times and have now given up bothering. We read the scheme books once as a tick box exercise and just keep her supplied with chapter books from the library and charity shops.

Books bands and Oxford levels are based on mixed method criteria so do not really apply to phonics although the big publishers insist on trying.
