Can anyone tell me roughly what you'd need to be able to do to be at expected level in PE for the end of year 1?? I've looked online but it seems all quote vague. Had school report today and he's below expected level

HSHorror For the EYG the motor skills one includes controlling letter size and writing on lines for the exceeding description. I suspect that would stop lots of sporty kids from getting exceeding.

Her writing is luckily pretty good. Easily year 1 standard. But yes i agree certainly sporty boys may well miss out there.
Having said that im not sure they have evidenced one piece of writing. Though i have and looking at it the writing is completely clear and legible. Really very straight even without lines. Apart from some slight variation in letter size i could have written it.

The levels really are very high and depend on school doing the evidencing.
Though dc cannot tie laces so it may be that but it's not like school have ever asked or told us that that is a requirement and certainly never shown either dc. I remember learning at.school.

Yes because sporty kids can't write. Honestly.

I didn’t mean it like that but there are plenty of children in my daughter’s class who are physically very able but wouldn’t write neatly on lines. It feels like quite different skills and I was surprised the moving and handling goal was as much about writing as it was the physical skills.

Bunny it was quite clear what you mean. Obviously writing is actually separate generally as a skill. As dc1 handwriting is now lovely yet not met in pe y4...
but as its a tick box in yr r some especially summer boys could be physically good (though actually still this is unfortunately less likely) but not able to write well as hand strength changes as you age.
Generally more active kids always at the park and gym etc may spend less time sat home crafting. As with everything the more time spent doing something the better you are and there is finite time

Yr 1 PE? Were you really expecting a future Team GB member?

Maybe enrol little one into more physical activities. Ps worry less.

The underpinning of sport is team work and physicality

The subject is PE though, not "sport", so team work and games are only a very small part of it, and are there as the way of supporting the activitity, they are not the focus.

If you think of it as physical literacy, the same as you might think of literacy and mathematical literacy then it would be clearer that the foundations of the subject is the movements. As the foundations of maths is numbers and the foundation english are phonics and letters.
