And what needs to be worked on? Thankyou.

And how old is this writing please?

It is definitely style over substance! Looks like a child who enjoys writing, hence the neatness and volume, which is a good starting point for them to improve. The actual content is pretty basic though. In our house we have the opposite - my 11 year old has great vocabulary and sentence structure but his physical handwriting looks like a six year old's!

MrPickles73 · 24/11/2020 06:53

I'm gobsmacked people have 6 year olds who can write like this Shock. This is age 10, yr 6. I wanted to know what her writing is like compared to other year 6.
The comments are depressing Confused. It seems people who have 6 year olds who write as well. I didn't think it was that bad and the story is quite creative (it's in a letter). They seem to be doing very little in english at the moment and she said she's had nothing marked all term so I was looking for tips on how she could improve, so thankyou. Paragraphs are a good starting point..

@MrPickles73 I am a primary teacher and have never seen a 6 year old write like this. People are taking the mick. Most 6 year olds can't even write a properly punctuated sentence. Your child's writing is fine.

MrPickles73 · 24/11/2020 07:15

Ah thankyou russell19 I was genuinely wondering what had gone wrong! We also have a 7 year old and he doesn't write like this (style or content)..

Please don't worry about the people saying age 6, this would not be typical at age 6! I think they were just making a "joke".

Ohalrightthen · 24/11/2020 07:23

I would say that her handwriting, while pretty, is very hard to read. Vertical letters, round shapes and better spacing!

unicornparty · 24/11/2020 07:27

Those saying 6 were not saying it as a joke. Well I wasn't anyway. As people have said, there's such a wide range of ability across ages. There was even a teacher earlier saying she understands that some 6 year olds could have written this.
My ds is in year 6 now but could have written this a few years ago. I just showed him and he mentioned a few things that could be improved upon.
Does your dc enjoy English op? They usually do well at subjects they enjoy.

Smellbellina · 24/11/2020 07:27

Having taught Yr 5 until this year I would say you have a very competent Yr 6 writer there.
The main things to work on would be spellings and using paragraphs but honestly, that piece of writing would make me very happy!

Smellbellina · 24/11/2020 07:29

I have never come met a child who has come close to being able to produce anything like this as 6. I have met a fair few parents who thought their child could though... despite the evidence in front of them Wink

Covidwoes · 24/11/2020 07:32

I'm a primary teacher with lots of experience in the upper juniors. I correctly guessed Y6. This is not a pupil I would have any concerns about. People who suggested a 6 year old have obviously come across some extremely bright 6 year olds!
If I were to suggest improvements, I'd say more complex sentences, and a discussion about paragraphs.

inappropriateraspberry · 24/11/2020 07:54

My daughter is 5, no way would she be writing like this in a year's time! Agree it looks like lovely neat writing for around 10. Nothing wrong with it - paragraphs etc will start developing now the basics are good.

Derbee · 24/11/2020 08:09

I would’ve guessed 11 or 12. All the people saying a 6 yr old writes like this don’t have a 6 year old

MrPickles73 · 24/11/2020 09:04

I get it now.. I was taken for a mumsnet fantasist.. no it was a genuine question Grin. I wanted to see whether she's yr 6 standard.
We've had a dire couple of months and for reasons I won't bore you with we may need to unexpectedly change schools for yr 7 which would involve an entrance exam in January / Februaryand I'm concerned her English is not that great Confused. Maths is fine
It's either right or wrong but English I find harder to gauge what she should be able to do in yr 6 so thankyou to those who were helpful.

Another vote for circa 10 or 11.
In fact my Cambridge educated English grad still has handwriting very much like this, so I certainly wouldn't be concerned about the scrawny spider style. It's not necessary to have perfect handwriting

StormyInTheNorth · 24/11/2020 09:41

I was joking when I said 6!

michaelbaubles · 24/11/2020 09:49

My 6yo DD has beautiful handwriting, a lively imagination and a wide vocabulary and wouldn't write something like that so it's definitely not at all typical of a 6 year old. The content is along the lines of what my y5 DS would write (but his writing is messier...)

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 24/11/2020 09:52

Fwiw when I read it I assumed y5 or 6. My DD is y8 and while her handwriting is worse her content is more mature.

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 24/11/2020 09:53

That's school y5 or 6 for clarity

SquishSquashSqueeze · 24/11/2020 09:53

@Greektome

It's very old-fashioned. Has the child travelled in time from an upper middle class family in the 1920s?
No, if you read the first line, they're taking the train to Cuntington.
MrPickles73 · 24/11/2020 09:58

Thankyou scentedgeranium this gives me hope.
Normally I feel quite upbeat about the whole thing but the last 2 months are total despair. Having to find a new school and now I'm worried they're not even up to average Confused.
So thankyou to those who've cheered me up.

If it makes you feel better OP, I think it's better than my 16 year old can manage most of the time. Which just goes to show what a huge range there is.

In terms of things to to work on, I'd say sentence openers (it comes over a bit like a list) and using more interesting sentence structure and vocabulary.

It amazes me how different peoples and children's writing is. One of my kids girlfriends writing looks like it's printed

We are a family of six and three have immaculate perfect writing and three have atrocious writing. 5 have great grammar and spelling and one (me!) doesn't.

My kids with terrible writing will have lost marks in exams and were moaned at by teachers throughout their school years but they still wrote terribly. They now both have good jobs so it didn't make any difference in the end.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 24/11/2020 12:36

Six year olds 😂😂😂😂😂😂

MN is absolutely wild sometimes!

OP you've got nothing to worry about at all Smile
