Swearing in year 3 reading book

babyin2020 · 04/11/2020 17:58

My 7 year old in year 3 came home today with a new book for reading at home he opened the book and handed it to me. The first line of the book opens with swearing. Do you think this is appropriate?

My prep school library had The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime. In year six we all knew it had the rudest swear word in the world in it, even though most of us didn't know what that word was!

CandyLeBonBon · 05/11/2020 22:31

Is this just a stealth brag?

Riv · 05/11/2020 22:31

Just to clarify, I think that the book contains ideas that shouldn’t be available to a child in school this age.

If parents want to give the book to their child, then fine. They are more likely to know the emotional mature of their child and what they are able to deal with, as long as they are aware of the books content and prepared to share and discuss it if necessary.

It was a world book day book - they release a book for each age category and somehow the teenage book has made it into your school. Could be a helpful parent picking them all up for £1 and staff have assumed because it’s WBD books they’re all safe and not actually read them.
I’ve not read every update (thread is so long!) but handing it back and explaining what’s wrong is definitely the way forward here!

purplebunny2012 · 05/11/2020 22:38

Definitely should not have been in a box for 7YOs

The novel itself is Young Adult, with Sephy and Callum contributing alternate chapters as they tell their entwined stories. There’s been much debate over what’s a suitable age to read the book with its challenging and upsetting content: the consensus has been around 12.

CandyLeBonBon · 05/11/2020 22:43

@Cronaca66

Must admit, I don’t like hearing children saying oh my God - inappropriate
Why is 'oh my god' inappropriate?
Riv · 05/11/2020 22:45

@lovemincepies. You are welcome. I have read the whole series. It’s interesting, challenging and as an adult I enjoyed it. My teenagers loved it. It explores racism, violence, terrorism, class conflict, inter racial relationships in a racist society, corruption and betrayal. It’s really well written and sustained across the main trilogy as well as a couple of World Book Day additional story development short reads.
I recommend it, just not for primary children.

Janetizzy30 · 05/11/2020 22:47

Freaking or ass to me is not swearing. Now if it was puss off of fuck or dipshit or someting like those...then id be offended. But i say freaking instead of fucking in front of my child.

Janetizzy30 · 05/11/2020 22:47

*piss off i meant 🤣

My son says freaking because of YouTube. Very frustrating
RightOnTheEdge · 05/11/2020 23:07

Why would it be a stealth brag? My year 3 ds would read that no problem and I don't think he's particularly advanced.

I would find it very inappropriate though. Its obviously a mistake. It's not something I'd be wanting my year 5 dd to read either.

They've heard plenty of swearing in the street or from friends at school or on TV or whatever and I would be a bit surprised but not too worried about "freaking" or "ass" they probably hear that plenty on YouTube.
I wouldn't be happy with "son of a bitch" though or "pissed" or "gangster AF"
I'm surprised how many posters would be OK with that or are being dismissive.

I think the descriptions of violence and talk of baggies and weed make it obviously not a book meant for 7/8 year olds.

wynchinuptheclose · 05/11/2020 23:08

I don't get it, there are three different books being quoted and at least two authors?

HairyPottyMouth · 05/11/2020 23:11

I’d be more concerned on how I’d be explaining ‘simulating copulation’ to an inquisitive 7 yo.

Just return the book to school, with a note or a phone call to head teacher explaining the mix up with the books on offer to the kids. It’s the Heads responsibility to make sure there are no more copies available to the younger children and that they aware of the content.

CandyLeBonBon · 05/11/2020 23:29

Wel @RightOnTheEdge way my children are thickos because they weren't reading at tjat level at 7.

Hats off to you though.

tolerable · 06/11/2020 01:08

superb!

BooseysMom · 06/11/2020 05:30

What does AF stand for after Gangster? I'm guessing it's not Aunty Flo. 🤣

GlacindaTheTroll · 06/11/2020 06:17

AF = as fuck

HoppingPavlova · 06/11/2020 06:39

Its hard to get boys to read. Whatever works.

Hercwasonaroll · 06/11/2020 06:56

The outrage from the OP is hilarious. It's clearly just a human error. Why not just have a quick word with the teacher and swap it.

Never fails to amaze me that parents get so worked up about human errors. Oh the stories I could tell...

icelolly99 · 06/11/2020 09:20

What was the schools response when you spoke to them about this book? I've read the Noughts and Crosses books recently; they are interesting reading but not for 7 year olds! I don't understand how they could end up in a Year 3 reading selection box!

randomer · 06/11/2020 09:51

Its hard to get boys to read

How so?

Lowkeevslucille · 06/11/2020 09:54

Hardly a big deal, just contact the school and tell them the book shouldn't have been in the box for year 3 readers. I would put a note on the book but also send an email frankly.

indeed
but it's MN, anything can be either offensive or bragging 😂

Confused

funnily enough, in my son's class, the top and first free readers are all boys.... loving reading AND wrestling and fighting whilst playing football and rugby.

Kids read at different levels. They are neither geniuses or what was it, "thickos". It's NORMAL.

randomer · 06/11/2020 10:30

Blimey, top and free eh? Amazing. And wrestling....its all going on.
