Masks banned for children at dc's primary school - teachers, can the head do this?

She says no masks for children at all without a medical reason and a doctor's note Hmm

She says the Dfe are v clear about masks in primary - but I think it's an arbitrary rule based on age, not physiology . My Y6 dd is as tall as me and so are a couple of her friends!

The kids go home. And there can be vulnerable parents.[/quote]
I was referring specifically to keepdistance’a point about wearing masks for the sake of teachers who are over 60 or previously shielding.

I get that, but masks are also to help reduce infection of other kids who in turn might take it home. So there is a chain here...

I know that. And I’m aware that children go home to vulnerable people. Mine do.
I was specifically responding to a particular post.

Interesting research from Belgium where schools returned earlier than the U.K.

Interesting research from Belgium where schools returned earlier than the U.K.

That's basically "infections have risen where lots of people are together" isn't it?

Children under ten shouldn’t wear one regardless.

They spread more chance of catching it with one by touching it, playing with it etc. It’s totally unnecessary to have one in a school setting. If the teachers can’t use them (and in many cases they have been strictly told they cannot use PPE) then an odd child in year six doesn’t.

In what circumstances is she using it OP?

if infections mainly happen in school and work then that is not necessarily a bad thing?

It means the actions that government are taking are working.

Workplaces and schools are a more controlled environment and measures can be strengthened to hopefully reduce infections.

Transmission in homes, across households which seems to be the case in the UK is far harder to manage.

I dont think that's good at all!
As you can choose who you visit or not but not who you work with or go to school with.
And no they cant stregthen measures in schools
without taking half the students out
Sending home with d&v for 2w
And for sore throats and headaches

Coughing needs clearer advice too.

Masks have to be worn for travelling between classrooms at DD's school by Y3 and upwards. We have shown DD how to remove it and put it on safely and she keeps it in a bag when not in use. She also has handgel for when she needs to touch the mask. I can't fault the school as they are doing their best to make sure that the children stay safe and that the school remains open.

I agree, it’s not good at all, there’s no social distancing in schools and masks aren’t worn in classrooms in most schools.

I have a couple of children wearing masks in Y6 and we're wearing visors as staff in my bubble - I have a couple of very vulnerable parents, so it's a no brainer. Other bubbles at our school are doing the same and so are a handful of children for various reasons. It absolutely needs to be optional.

That one comment has rendered everything else you have said as irrelevant. Spite has no place in a discussion this.

It's quite weird to see all those countries doing better than UK let/make children wear masks at school.
I can understand the mandatory mask wearing. Cannot understand banning it. Why can they let children choose, at least some old enough to make a decision can choose to wear them or not. I don't get the mentality at all.

The UK has always allowed children to wear masks at school. Very few schools have banned masks - indeed, the only one I know has done so is the one referred to by the OP.

My children have to go to school in a mask, in fact they have to wear it from when they step out in the morning till back in the afternoon (not UK). It’s awful and they (and I) hate it.
Children should not wear facemasks. Careful what you wish for.

I was watching the news from my own country last few weeks/months. And yes, the cases are increasing and they are introducing stricter measures. But increase is mostly 20s+, and restriction are on opening hours of places that serves alcohol in major cities and travelling unnecessarily, but didn't really hear much about school aged children being affected and in danger of closing school etc. Big difference is strict mask wearing.
I do wonder which is better for children. Wearing uncomfortable mask , or continually disrupted education.

Actually, the DfE stated in their guidance for schools that they had to have formal procedures in place for all staff and students to remove masks upon arriving at school. Some schools have gone against this and permitted kids to wear masks within school if they wish but many have not. Either way, the DfE made it clear that the expectation nationally was that masks would not be worn within schools by any staff or students.

This changed for secondary school students in certain areas in certain circumstances but has still never been policy to allow them in the classrooms.
