Prep school parents: are your schools only readmitting YR, Y1 and Y6?

Just wondered if independent schools have the ability to choose their year groups differently. In boys preps, Y8 is the transition year and Y5 is arguably a more important year by this stage in the school year. The govt advice to readmit Y6 is based on it being the last year before secondary school, no? Just curious to know how your schools are interpreting this. Ours is following official guidelines which seems short-sighted to me.

Ours are taking nursery, reception, year 1 and 6.
They are clear that they will open for the rest as soon as possible. we have a very unusual school building that under normal circumstances is an absolute pain, but is perfect for the current situation: classrooms are in mini- buildings of about 2-3 all over the grounds (with own toilets ad tons of sinks), so its easy to keep bubbles apart (and classes are 15-17 anyway)

@SpokeTooSoon just to clarify that y8 is also a transition year for girls. My children have both attended the same prep which goes to yr8. Not specifically a boy problem.

Our school is sticking to guidance too, but then online learning has been fantastic so I am happy. Although DS is yr5 and needs a lot of input before entrance exams next January.....

private school, part of a bigger founation, here just Y3-6, head wanted everyone back but has been told no so only Y6 will go back on 1st June

Spoke It's causing anxiety because we feel the head is making it up as he goes along. Not just with picking Year 5 over Year 6 but not following many of the other guidlines too.

Exactly. Any head who hasn't grasped the basic fact of which year groups are allowed back is really worryingly out of touch in terms of the guidance,. If I were to be a teacher in that school I would be really worried about what else was being ignored / changed for convenience / to match the head's own ideas.

Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 are going back, it’s not compulsory, remote online learning will also continue. My DD is Year 8 and she still has to take Common Entrance exams first week of June! Haven’t been told how exactly, posting exam papers or emailing them I assume. She must be one of the few children still revising for exams. Poor thing. Confused

underneaththeash · 20/05/2020 22:44

they can't choose unfortunately. DD's prep/senior is massive and could easily cope with all of prep/pre-prep and 10.12 back at once, but their hands are tied. DS in year 7 at prep has exams in Nov for senior school.

It's not good. But we're getting more teaching. DS1 at grammar is getting none.

Years R, 1 and 6 only at our DD’s prep.

My kids’ school is hoping to get everyone back and pushing government/ISI to support it. They have said they can bring in all the government measures as operate safely. It was a former boarding school so they have plenty of room. The teachers are all seemingly very keen to return to F2F learning. If they can’t get them all back it will just be R, Yr 1 and Yr6 which would mean one of my kids back but not the other.
