Oh well done that child

nailpolish · 12/09/2007 14:12

but is it ok for the teacher to hand out sweeties?

Yes, not unusual, I'm afraid. I hate this, personally, but dd1 had it with a particularly witchy teacher she had in Y2, and the sweety bribe was the only thing that kept her going, so I said nothing.

Mercifully dc's primary school has applied for Healthy Schools status, so this kind of business has been banned. They now get little pencils or stickers as prizes instead. Much better IMO.

Twiglett · 12/09/2007 14:12

is this your first child in school np?

oliveoil · 12/09/2007 14:12

why isn't she allowed sweets?

Twiglett · 12/09/2007 14:12

you have much to learn if it is

nailpolish · 12/09/2007 14:17

the school has a healthy eating status!!! they are having a huge push for healthy eating and the school dinners are ultra-healthy

shes not allowed sweets cos sweets are full of shite and sugar

laugh if you like

OP posts:
oliveoil · 12/09/2007 14:18

well imo if you ban something they want it even more

Twiglett · 12/09/2007 14:18

healthy eating is about everything in moderation IMO

oliveoil · 12/09/2007 14:18

fgs

sane

seeker · 12/09/2007 14:20

I won't laugh - mine have very few sweets. But I think a few chocolate buttons from the teacher when you are little isn't going to do you any harm at all, and might just make the day go smoothly and happily.

nailpolish · 12/09/2007 14:20

but she doesnt want sweets
she knows they are bad for her teeth etc

waht the fuck is wrong with that
she isnt allowed fizzy juice either

she can have cakes etc

the sweets in question were those superman chews
osrry, but how can you have shite like that "in moderation"

Is she in reception nailpolish? At ds1 and dd's school, they have healthy eating wotsit as well, so no unhealthy snacks, EXCEPT that when it's a child's birthday they bring in sweets for the WHOLE class.

oliveoil · 12/09/2007 14:22

mine have sweets but ones without colourings and shite in them - they do exist!

sugar is fine imo

fizzy drinks no as I don't like them for me so they are never in the house (apart from my Nigella Ham in Coke)

Twiglett · 12/09/2007 14:22

if I try really hard nailpolish, I can just about remember experiencing the same sentiment when my eldest was 4 too .. but looking back now I think I over-reacted .. I think as they get older your control naturally lessens and you appreciate that there are things that won't kill 'em 'in moderation' if their general diet is healthy ..and I include fizzy sweets, haribo crap etc in that

tortoisekinnockSHELL · 12/09/2007 14:23

My kids don't have sweets at other times, so I don't mind that, but I was amused the other day when they were both eating those sugar free lollies (not given them by me), and ds1(6) said to dd who is 4 - "You have to go and brush your teeth now". Ha ha I thought, at least I've taught him something. Dd retorted "But I already have!"

madamez · 12/09/2007 14:23

I think it's possibly a bit unwise of a teacher to hand out sweeties - there's always the possibility of allergies or diabetes or something, so stickers would be much better (although there's just bound to be someone somewhere whose DC are allergic to glue or were once traumatized by inadvertently sticking a sticker up their nose or something...). But then again I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, either.

oliveoil · 12/09/2007 14:24

haribo do not have colourings in them (I think...)

or not E numbers anyway

I am willing to be shot down in flames

nailpolish · 12/09/2007 14:24

we dont have reception
they jut go to p1 age 4.5 - 5.5

dd1 didnt say it was for any special reason

it went like this

(her version)
teacher "have a sweet dd1"
dd1 "im not allowed sweets"
t "surely one is ok"
d "no"
t "oh dear have a sticker instead"

god i feel bad now
but dd1 seems proud of herself

tortoisekinnockSHELL · 12/09/2007 14:24

I agree, moderation is the key. Otherwise you risk making them crave sweets when they are older.

oliveoil · 12/09/2007 14:25

dd1 used to come home with all sorts from playgroup, she is v obedient and came home with the unopened bag "here you go mummy, for after my tea"

dd2 just gives me the empty bag

I would be surprised tbh. This is Scotland the sick man of Europe we are talking here.
