Are my son's SATs results good?

I can't make heads nor tails of it Grin

He got 112 for Maths
118 for spag
120 for reading

Will this get him into good sets for secondary school?

People. Not teachers in the same sector - even Y2 tests are scored using scaled scores. But parents can't be expected to understand without explanation, I agree.

Feenie · 12/07/2019 22:54

And before anyone points out that KS1 assessment is teacher assessment only, without test scores, which is obviously correct, previous year group teachers need to know how other year groups are performing.

User7777 · 12/07/2019 22:55

Ime most secondary schools will test children in the first term as sat results can't really be trusted. Schools coach for them, some schools spend all of year 6 preparing for them. They aren't a reliable indicator of a childs ability.

Whatthehell2020000 · 12/07/2019 22:56

@Feenie
You are actually quite amusing. What do you want me to say? Ok yes I have lied....I wanted to boast to a group of strangers on an anonymous online community about his results because that will make me feel amazing. I mean literally WTF. Get a grip, seriously and please stop replying on my thread.

I work full time, in an INFANT school and nursery. We don't have year 6 children at the school, so yes, I am in the 'bubble' of an early years setting.

As a secondary teacher I need to know 100 is expected standard and the further away from that you are, the better/worse you have done.

We set them initially based on the sats, by the way quickly re set using our own assessments.

Feenie · 12/07/2019 23:04

I don't think you're lying - I do think you need to know how performance measures for the children in your school work, from Reception to Y2. It's basic and what your school is entirely judged upon, unfortunately

As for not commenting on your thread, I'm not sure you're very clear on how a talk board works (let alone your own school).

madeyemoodysmum · 12/07/2019 23:04

Another one

I’m sorry but I seriously disbelieve you don’t know how SATs work

I didn't read any of the 7 pg letter info b4 I looked at & understood DS's scores.
I didn't need 7 pgs b/c I knew how to interpret DS's scores... from enough browsing MN in last 3 days.
I'm working about 50 hrs/week at the moment do I win the Internet.

DC school also ran at least one info session about SATs for parents (we didn't attend).

Whatthehell2020000 · 12/07/2019 23:17

@madeyemoodysmum
Yes yes you're right. As I gain so much from posting on an anonymous forum about my son's SATs scores Confused

You lose quite a bit of credibility and sympathy through admitting you are actually a Reception teacher though. You really do need to know how the scoring system works in your role - not necessarily as a parent, but because of where you teach. Learning curve from now on, perhaps?

stupidboyman · 13/07/2019 00:30

My dd is also exceeding in all three scaled scores. We were given no info by our generally high achieving school. I knew she had passed but I wanted to know if she was exceeding and if she was if she had just scraped exceeding or was comfortably in it. I googled it and eventually found that 110 was the threshold. I really don't get what the op has done wrong. 10% of us have children that are exceeding - it's not that special but equally I know I wanted some context to understand just how good the results were.

Feenie · 13/07/2019 00:43

You shouldn't, as a parent, have to google.

The OP, as a Reception teacher, works in a school which is completely driven by such measures (although they only inform, rather than describe, the exact measures).

Witchend · 13/07/2019 01:02

Actually you're wrong.

They decided to keep parents on their toes and double the results round every couple of years so they can announce that pupils are doing better and better.
So last year 100 and above was expected, 110 and above was exceeding and 120 was the top mark.
This year 200 and above is expected, 220 and above is exceeding and 240 is the top mark. To compare with last year you just need to halve the results you've been given.

Tis true.

Whatthehell2020000 · 13/07/2019 06:35

@Feenie are you aware that the early years curriculum is not assessed in this way? We don't have year 6 or even year 2s at our school, so there are NO SATs going on where I work. It's like expecting a family lawyer to also be an expert in property law. I'm not sure why you are so stuck on this. I work full time and have 5 children, so am quite a busy person! Seriously, get over it!!

madeyemoodysmum · 13/07/2019 08:21

My ds got good marks (not 120,s). across the board. I know he has done his very best and I’m proud of him

However I do t come on here and ask if he has done well in the guise of not knowing.

It’s attention seeking and ridiculous.

And doth protest too much

I’m glad your proud but drop it now please

Whatthehell2020000 · 13/07/2019 08:30

@madeyemoodysmum
Hilarious.

UselessTrees · 13/07/2019 08:41

We don't have year 6 or even year 2s at our school

That sounds like a very unusual infant school. Where do the year two children go?

Whatthehell2020000 · 13/07/2019 09:06

Bloody hell this is like a witch hunt to see if I am telling the truth 😂🙄 just why would I be lying? I am so amused by this!!!

It is a nursery , reception and year 1 setting. The year 2s to year 6s go to another school in the town. It is because if the size if the buildings so they spread it over 2 schools. Does that satisfy you?

OP posts:
Whatthehell2020000 · 13/07/2019 09:07

I am genuinely not answering anymore questions as I have got the answers from the normal, balanced and kind posters - thank you for that.

OP posts:
Aragog · 13/07/2019 09:42

And yes, I am a reception teacher in a nursery and infant school. We don't do year 6 SATs.as we don't even have KS2 children in my school so I don't have a clue!

Ks1 SATs have scaled marks just the same

lorisparkle · 13/07/2019 09:48

In defence of the OP I am sure there are many teachers in KS2 who have not got a clue about the assessments in the Foundation Stage, especially if they teach in a junior school or a middle school.

debandsifarr · 13/07/2019 10:04

I agree with latter comments. Sorry to be cynical but am a headteacher and feels again like parental 'public declaration' by a parent of a child under the guise of naivety! You would only have to Google to find out.

OnceFreshFish · 13/07/2019 10:23

Surely it depends on the secondary, a selective secondary he may well not be in top sets since you don't have to be exceptional to get full marks.

I seriously fail to believe that anyone isn't capable of looking up how to interpret sats results. Vyoud have to have real educational issues or be semi literate not to be able to find the information online.

WillLokireturn · 13/07/2019 10:23

@Whatthehell2020000
I agree.
The wolf pack have been out on several threads last few days OP, in amongst the helpful posters. Totally unneccessary.

It's perfectly reasonable to ask this question on MN. Our school hasn't explained it either. The scoring has changed from when my older two DCs did it a few years ago (it used to be 4s, 5s and 6s in SATs back then). This new one is harder to understand as the charts we've been given have so many numbers on it, extraneous information and no clear explanation.
