Do you allow photos taken of your child to be published in newspapers etc.?

Because I ticked the box that I didn't at when dd1 started school, and the decision has come back to haunt me now when dd1 ended up the only child of a whole group who was not in the picture. She was gutted.

Some vague (misguided, I now believe) thoughts about people seeing the picture who might have bad intentions?

We were never asked this in any of our schools. But we do get it on forms when joining new clubs/activities. I don't know why any one has a problem with the picture appearing in the paper. I am thinking it's to do with "unsuitable" looking at children type thing, but I don't really understand a parent's reluctance to have their child in a photo in the paper.
I'd welcome someone explaining it to me.

Definitely misguided but totally understandable - the tick in the box is to cover the school's back; sometimes when faced with a decision like that it's easy to err on the side of caution.
I don't think there's a great deal anybody can do from a pic in the paper but I remember having a bad reaction the first time I saw photos of my daughter on someone's blog on the web and overreacted - had to get used to it eventually when I realised that everyone of her age does it and I was making her life a misery.

some children in schools have horrific histories

if you were a battered partner escaping with your children you wouldn't want them to spot the child in the paper

if your partner was at risk of taking your children out of the country

there are many valid reasons for not wanting publicity for your child

Well emkana if none of those apply to you, go back to school and say you want to untick the box.

At our school one child saying no means all get no chance to have their pics done, and they often ask in front of peole so the dissenter is erm, known

Understand in certain cases- eg I know of some foster kids who aren't allowed to have their pics done- but generally see no harm, indeed ds's love it

Yes. School has policy of not publishing names along side the group photos. Happy with that.

I have no problem with it at all, DD was right at the front of the pic when they were in the paper for their Ofsted report! Very proud Mummy! Pic here;
