Have I bought too much school uniform?

I have a son starting reception in September and everyone I work with has said I have gone OTT with the uniform. Just friendly banter and all a bit of a laugh so I am just light heartily wondering what others think of as "too much".

I am not prepared to do a mid week wash so I have a new pair of everything, for every day of the week - I don't want to be sponging yogurt off of his polo to send him in to wear the following day (seems a bit dirty).

I have bought 9 polo tops, 6 pairs of trousers, 2 branded school jumpers, 1 school fleece and all the crap they need for their PE kit/drinks bottle/bag etc...

It was all in the Sainsburys 25% off sale so I got all the non branded school items for about £30 - also the trousers are all on the big side so the 6 pairs will probably last him all year until he needs shorts in summer.

Urm...maybe a little bit much.

But never mind Grin

tryingtocatchthewind · 24/08/2018 14:13

It doesn't usually come in helpful packs of 5 but yes I think two packs of polo tops would have been enough and you probably could have got away with two packs of trousers.
It's not that excessive.

aurorie11 · 24/08/2018 14:13

Not sure why so many polo tops, but for my DS always had 5 pairs of trousers, 5 polo shirts, 5 pairs of school socks and 5 fleece jumpers. Don’t want to have to wash and iron midweek, he has a clean set for every day.

dementedpixie · 24/08/2018 14:14

Mine have 6 shirts, 6 trousers (ds), 6 skirts (dd) as everything came in a pack of 2 and I'd rather have too many items than too few

TeenTimesTwo · 24/08/2018 14:14

That is quite a lot.
9 polo tops seems to be at least 4 too many!

Personally we found 2 of everything sufficient until y6, though DD didn't play football in the mud at breaktimes.

Orchidflower1 · 24/08/2018 14:15

Lol! Maybe a little on the non branded stuff otoh my ds had to have clean sweatshirt every day in eyfs as he can home full of lunch/ paint so you may benefit from a third sweatshirt - could you get just the colour without the logo?

SellFridges · 24/08/2018 14:17

Not that excessive. I work on theory of having 6 full sets. I don’t always have chance to wash in the week.

Matilda1981 · 24/08/2018 14:19

Yeah - I’d say you’ve gone a little crazy on the non branded stuff and not enough school logo jumpers if you don’t want to do a midweek wash as you may find a jumper only lasts a day, the polo shirts will be kept fairly clean as they’ll have a jumper over them!

dementedpixie · 24/08/2018 14:21

Mine never wore jumpers so I think I only ever bought 2 or 3 in the whole time they were at primary school

Bubblysqueak · 24/08/2018 14:23

Nope not too much. I bought 5 sets of trousers, 5 t shirts and 5 jumpers. Wish I had got 6 so I had a spare set for photos.

Nicpem1982 · 24/08/2018 14:29

Not too much my dd is in nursery and we have

12 polos
4 tunics
3 trousers
3 skirts
5 jumpers/cardis

12 polos as I iron fortnightly excessive amounts of bottoms as we mix it up depending on the weather

Tentomidnight · 24/08/2018 14:32

You’ll probably only need half the trousers and polo shirts, but up to you really.

My DC’s have made it through prinary with 2x trousers and 3x polos at any given time. But they are quite ‘clean’ children in terms of eating and playing.

Nicpem1982 · 24/08/2018 14:34

I would add my dd is feral and her uniform regularly needs soaking

EnglishGirlApproximately · 24/08/2018 14:37

I have 6 of everything, I don’t have the time or inclination to wash uniform midweek and Ds comes home filthy so it’s just easier to have an outfit for every day, plus a spare in case of a busy weekend. Embroidered jumpers at £12 each pains be though tbh

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/08/2018 14:38

I don't think.jts that kuch really although I'd have sacrificed a few of those polos for an extra logo school jumper..2 is not enough. Especially if they leave it behind one day and the other isnt washed yet.

Think it's better to have a bit much and then have the buffer zone if stuff gets hectic and you forgot to put some washing on, than it is to scrape the crap off the top and 're use it

mamalovebird · 24/08/2018 14:41

I normally get 6 shirts, 2 shorts/skirts, 5 pairs of socks each & 1 jumper/cardi as september isn't cold enough for mine to wear jumpers every day. DS hates trousers so will only get them if absolutely necessary.

Believeitornot · 24/08/2018 14:43

If you don’t want to wash mid week then one a day is enough?

Plus not sure sains, even with 25% off, is always cheaper (sadly I worked it out for some items!)

This is why there’s never anything when I come to buy the week before they start school 🤣

lauralee44 · 24/08/2018 14:44

I don't think to much I get 5 of everything like to have fresh everyday wash and iron on a Sunday so much easier

Witchofwisteria · 24/08/2018 14:50

I might take 1 pack of polos and 2 pairs of trousers back, in the sale 3 polos and 2 pairs of trousers were £10 so I might put that towards his school shoes! I think 9 polos is quite a lot I guess! I agree I could do with an extra jumper but the school wanted £12 each for them, once we have our feet under the table I am buying an unbranded one!

TBH - I don't think you can have too much school uniform. It saves having to do a midweek wash; and if you go away for the weekend you don't have to worry about getting uniform ready by Monday morning.

Gizlotsmum · 24/08/2018 14:53

I have a shirt and bottoms for each day of the week. 3 jumpers/ cardis as they show the dirt less. I still try to wash mid week but it means if I don’t it’s not a major issue

YeTalkShiteHen · 24/08/2018 14:54

It wasn’t until I came to get all the uniform ready that I realised DD has enough uniform to go 2 weeks without me having to do washing Blush

I donated the extra to the family centre down the road.

KingLooieCatz · 24/08/2018 15:00

I say 5 of everything. DS is now 9 and we have only recently started to get two days wear out of any element occasionally. The jumpers are least likely to be worn, but on the hand they are most likely to get lost. They do usually turn up in the end but if you only have a couple and one goes AWOL for a week you're stuck.

anniehm · 24/08/2018 15:07

I used to have five polo shirts, three bottoms (skirts mostly for us) a couple of jumpers and a fleece. I wouldn't say too excessive and word of warning, don't expect the trousers to all last and stock up on knee patches - playgrounds are rough surfaces!

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/08/2018 15:09

How about swapping it for the next size up as it was sale price.?
