Have I bought too much school uniform?

I have a son starting reception in September and everyone I work with has said I have gone OTT with the uniform. Just friendly banter and all a bit of a laugh so I am just light heartily wondering what others think of as "too much".

I am not prepared to do a mid week wash so I have a new pair of everything, for every day of the week - I don't want to be sponging yogurt off of his polo to send him in to wear the following day (seems a bit dirty).

I have bought 9 polo tops, 6 pairs of trousers, 2 branded school jumpers, 1 school fleece and all the crap they need for their PE kit/drinks bottle/bag etc...

It was all in the Sainsburys 25% off sale so I got all the non branded school items for about £30 - also the trousers are all on the big side so the 6 pairs will probably last him all year until he needs shorts in summer.

It's fine.

My kids have gym twice a week so mist wear the gym day uniform on those 2 days.

The other 3 days is normal uniform.

I have 3 sets of gym uniform each (one for each day and a spare each incase of rips).

And I have 4 sets of normal day uniform (one for each day and a spare each).

Then all the water bottles, bags, jackets etc.

NaomiNagata · 24/08/2018 15:12

And I had to buy all mine from the school; we can't use supermarket stuff!

TokyoSushi · 24/08/2018 15:18

Too many trousers & polos and not enough jumpers!

Notso · 24/08/2018 15:27

It seems loads to me but I begrudge spending on uniform so buy the bare minimum. Mine have 3 polo tops/shirts, two trousers and two jumpers plus a jumper and trousers in the next size up which double as emergency wear.
I couldn't be doing with having to wash 15 sets of uniform (3 DC in school) at the weekend.

yikesanotherbooboo · 24/08/2018 15:44

Same as Notso more or less. Actually less for my older children. No midweek washes but some emergency morning sponging.

Nicpem1982 · 24/08/2018 15:46

Notso- may I ask why you begrudge buying uniform when they dcs are in it 5 full days a week for 38 weeks a year? Genuinely curious

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/08/2018 16:12

My son is in year two this year and I buy more than that as I buy a size up and it lasts all year, but I don’t open it all in one go.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/08/2018 16:13

And also he wears school polos for his hobby on Saturday

FemaleDilbert · 24/08/2018 16:18

I get 5 full sets of everything. I reckon you’ll need another jumper, especially if he/she is having school lunches as will prob spill stuff on it.

Oblomov18 · 24/08/2018 16:26

I find: 6 shirts (1spare) 3 pairs of trousers, 2 jumpers. Enough for both boys.

FlaviaAlbia · 24/08/2018 16:39

I've got 6 shirts, 2 jumpers, 2 pairs of trousers, 2 sports polos and one set of tracksuit bottoms and top.

He'll be having packed lunches so I won't have school dinner gravy to contend with but I think I'll need another pair of trousers.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 24/08/2018 16:44

I think you’ll need more than 2 school jumpers... They won’t be making their way home everyday Grin
I get 3 or 4 at the second hand sale although in reception DD had everything new. Now I know that £17 cardigan/ jumper gets as easily lost as a £1 one from the sale, I’m not that bothered about brand new items.

Redsharks · 24/08/2018 16:48

I've only bought two logo cardigans for my DD who is starting reception in September too, but I probably will do a midweek wash (as I'm a little OCD about washing).

I bought a pack of 5 polos from NEXT so there's one for each day, and then a pack of two skirts and a pinafore. DD also has a summer dress as they were in the sale and DD associates the summer dress with school uniform after transitions in July. I'm hoping I've bought enough, but we'll see!

I'd take a pack of trousers and polos back if you think you've gone OTT, but for £10 I'd probably keep them and be comfortable during the week if you don't want to midweek wash.

CoperCabana · 24/08/2018 16:58

I have always managed on a couple of everything but that meant two mid week washes. So in the last few months, I have slowly built up to 5 full sets and my goodness it makes a difference to my mid week sanity!

SoyDora · 24/08/2018 17:16

I don’t begrudge buying uniform as they wear it so much, plus while they’re wearing it they’re not wearing ‘normal’ clothes so I have to buy less of that.
DD starts next week and I’ve bought 6 polo shirts, 2 pinafores, 2 skirts, 2 summer dresses, 3 cardigans and 2 sweatshirts. I don’t want to be scrabbling around for clean uniform mid week.

YerAuntFanny · 24/08/2018 17:19

My daughter has just started primary school.

She has 2 pinafores, 2 trousers, 6 polo shirts, 4 cardigans, 1 pair of shoes plus gym shoes, t-shirt and shorts.

LikeARedBalloon · 24/08/2018 17:22

I've bought 10 shirts so I only have to iron a bundle once a fortnight! I always work on fresh shirt or polo each day and skirt usually lasts 2 days if I'm lucky. You can never have too much
uniform!

orangeicecream · 24/08/2018 17:22

Wow I am obviously the exception this.... My two are older just into secondary now but I've always made do with one full set plus one extra shirt. I wash whole uniform mid week... And I don't iron. Obviously lots of socks though.

Chocolala · 24/08/2018 17:23

6 blouses, 2 pinafores, 1 cardi and 1 blazer does for us here.

CherryChatsworth · 24/08/2018 17:32

Mine is about to start year 7 now and I've always overbought school uniform

9 polo tops
6 jumpers
4 trousers

Meant I never had to worry about missing a wash

CherryChatsworth · 24/08/2018 17:34

I don't understand that @Notso - they wear it for 25 plus hours a week. Doesn't it look all tatty very quickly?

123bananas · 24/08/2018 17:44

I have six sets for ds who is starting school in September, but he is autistic and still toilet training so may need extra in case of accidents.

My older kids get by with 4 sets and a mid week wash. Hold back a few polo tops out of circulation to replace the ones that will soon be ruined by paints and pens.

lorisparkle · 24/08/2018 17:49

I found the polo shirts end up getting stained with either school dinner, grass, black dry wipe pen, sun cream, etc so end up buying more before the end of term. I also find the trousers end up with holes in the knees so buy more! We have three sweatshirts as they too end up with all manner of stains but are navy so don’t notice as much.

Make sure you label stuff very well and hope for the best!

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 24/08/2018 17:52

So you’re either going to be doing. Mid week wash or spongeing yogurt then! Grin that isn’t enough jumpers for a clean one everyday without washing!

TrashPanda · 24/08/2018 17:53

We have 2 shorts, 2 trousers and 2 jumpers then 6 polos. The jumpers and trousers will last a couple of days but he gets a clean white polo every day. I also don't have many other white clothes so the 6th one is the emergency Monday one when I realise I haven't done a white wash.
