Have I bought too much school uniform?

I have a son starting reception in September and everyone I work with has said I have gone OTT with the uniform. Just friendly banter and all a bit of a laugh so I am just light heartily wondering what others think of as "too much".

I am not prepared to do a mid week wash so I have a new pair of everything, for every day of the week - I don't want to be sponging yogurt off of his polo to send him in to wear the following day (seems a bit dirty).

I have bought 9 polo tops, 6 pairs of trousers, 2 branded school jumpers, 1 school fleece and all the crap they need for their PE kit/drinks bottle/bag etc...

It was all in the Sainsburys 25% off sale so I got all the non branded school items for about £30 - also the trousers are all on the big side so the 6 pairs will probably last him all year until he needs shorts in summer.

If you've got too much then so have I!

I've bought DD:
6 polo shirts (3 packs of 2)
2 skirts
2 dresses
2 pairs of trousers
1 school branded jumper
1 school branded cardigan

Quite a lot but all (apart from the branded stuff) from Asda. My excuse is that I've got newborn DS and washing isn't always a priority in this house atm!

megletthesecond · 24/08/2018 17:55

I don't think that's too much. Some of the polos will get trashed and be fit for the rag bin by Xmas.
Tbh you might need another sweater.

ImogenTubbs · 24/08/2018 18:24

DD has two skirts, three shirts, two jumpers, one PE kit and lots of socks and tights.

But then everything at her school is branded (except the socks and tights) and costs a fricking fortune. Including her rucksack and school jacket.

If it was discount standard stuff I'd definitely have over-stocked! Sounds v sensible OP.

Slartybartfast · 24/08/2018 18:29

more jumpers needed. the wear jumpers most of the time ime

dementedpixie · 24/08/2018 18:33

Depends on the child as neither of mine wore jumpers more than a few times at school

cliffdiver · 24/08/2018 18:33

I agree you need more jumpers.

DDs have 5/6 of shirts, skirts, cardigans and 10 pairs of socks each.

Notso · 24/08/2018 23:20

@Nicpem1982 I find it ugly and impractical. I'd rather spend more on out of school clothes.
@CherryChatsworth no, I find the younger ones grow out of it or wreck it with holes or stains before it looks tatty. Their sweatshirts are pretty bomb proof though and I can pass them on between DC.
The older kids logo jumpers look shocking after a few washes anyway.
It's pretty easy to get hold of new uniform as and when needed so I just don't see the point of having tonnes of it.

suitcaseofdreams · 24/08/2018 23:23

Sounds like quite a lot but not ridiculously so :-)

If the polos are white they won’t last all year without going grey/getting stains which won’t come out so although you don’t need 9 now you will use them throughout the year (unless he has a growth spurt of course!) Keep one unworn until school photo day too :-)

My twin boys (now Yr 3) have about 10 polos, 4 jumpers and around 10 pairs of trousers between them - so there’s usually enough for me not to wash during the week if I don’t get time...in summer I’m more likely to run out of clean polos and in winter the jumpers are the problem - whatever’s on top ends up filthy...but that might just be my two - if there’s mud to be sat in or pen to leak or baked beans for lunch you can guarantee they’ll find it!

BesmirchingMotherhood · 24/08/2018 23:29

My DS needed full clean set of everything every day.

However, he likely won’t need jumpers for a bit yet and you might find the School does uniform banks so you might be able to pick up some jumpers cheap.

Also, if it’s the same as our jumpers, they don’t come in many sizes (ie 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 etc) so there’s every chance that whatever you buy for YR will work when he’s in Y1.

bookmum08 · 24/08/2018 23:34

'no mid week wash'. Eh? When do you wash your clothes? And your towels? Bed sheets? Blimey. If I didn't spread the washing out over the week I would have to do about 4 loads in one day. I can only fit one load on the clothes horse at a time anyway (in a flat no outdoor drying space).
You have bought far too much.

Sofabitch · 24/08/2018 23:36

No where near enough jumper...3 will be lost within a month.

But I'm the same one of everything for 5 days. Just makes life easier

Yura · 25/08/2018 06:12

there is no such thing as too much school uniform. troysers will be torn at the knee in no time, shirts stained. you might have a couple of surplus shirts, but the rest sounds fine!

Yura · 25/08/2018 06:17

add on: we have 6 pairs of trousers, 8 shirts (4 long sleeved, 4 short sleeved), 3 jumpers for year 1. we had less in reception and it was a pain

TacoFriday · 25/08/2018 06:21

Not at all. Half of those will be covered in marks and pens and god knows what within first two weeks and not come out in the wash.

Black board pens are my nemesis

AJPTaylor · 25/08/2018 06:24

In primary school uniform can be bought for buttons at the supermarket. Get plenty.

Yummymummy2810 · 25/08/2018 13:03

When my eldest now 13 first started school i bought 15 polos shirt because she was very messy and by the end of year ,i only managed to keep like 5 in good condition and i think you got the right amount

livingthegoodlife · 25/08/2018 21:17

I feel like we don't have much in comparison but I did wash midweek.

4 polos, 2 pinafores, 2 cardigans. Lots of socks/tights.

That got us through reception fine and all in good enough condition to be passed to my youngest starting this September.

MummySparkle · 25/08/2018 21:48

Keep a pack of polo shirts back - you won't need them all at once and some will definitely get wrecked!

I do a wash most days here, washer dryer so I set it off overnight to be dry in the morning. Jumpers always seem to get dirty. We've made do with two, but I wish I could get a third one. At £10 each for a logo one I'll try and make do / find a 2nd hand one.

DS is going into y1 and DD is starting reception, I've been given loads of girls uniform from DS's friends. Only had to buy polos as everyone's were wrecked by July! Thankfully we can wear red ones, but I don't like them with the red jumpers. But they last so much better than the white during the summer term

AJPTaylor · 26/08/2018 08:20

I would buy a couple of non branded jumpers as well. Sainsburys always good for that.

Lisaquin01 · 26/08/2018 16:08

ive got a reception starter also,
she has
4 dresses
5 polo shirts
2 cardis... branded
5 pairs of socks
millions of summer dresses (2nd born! and they are the only thing that have kept well from DD1)

I have another 2 cardis in the size up as they were on offer from the school shop

nzeire · 26/08/2018 16:19

Wow!!!! Seems like a huge amount to me!!! 2 shirts, 2 skirts/pants for my two! Never have they gone to school in a dirty uniform.

Washing machine on every day. It would not be a fun weekend otherwise!

downinthejunglee · 26/08/2018 16:22

Tbh I wish I had bought this many when mine was that age, every single day there was a new stainConfused

Didiplanthis · 26/08/2018 20:00

Lisa - what colour are your summer dresses that can be handed down - our need binning every term !!
