Our Lady of Muswell Hill or Muswell Hill Primary

Hello I am trying to decide which one of these two schools would be a better fit for my daughter who will start reception in September 2018 and I would love to hear from any parent with children at either school. Muswell hill primary seems a lovely school but worried might be too much play and no work. Any feedback (negative or positive) would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

September 2018? Have you recently moved into the area? You normally have to decide and apply by January for September, I think, listing up to 6 schools in preference order.

On the other side of Haringey and can't compare the schools, but Our Lady of Muswell is a Catholic school. Are you interested in a faith school education, are you a Catholic, have you looked at their criteria?

I wouldn't worry too much about "no work" as the curriculum means that your kids will face more than enough of that at any primary school that gets through OFSTED inspections. Nothing wrong with learning through play in Early Years, including Reception.

All schools there are down on numbers so you’ll get a place in either most likely. Totally different in character though so what do you want? Are you observant Catholic? If so, OLM. If not, MHP. Simple.

@ourkidmolly wow, undersubscribed schools in Muswell Hill? Any idea why/how? Just that there was a problem with lack of school places for Crouch End in recent years so this doesn't make sense to me. I'd have thought Crouch End parents would have preferred to go to MHP than the other side of the ladder. Anyways, interesting.

Under 7 population is falling in London. Peaked 7 years ago and last few years most schools have not been hugely oversubscribed. That includes Crouch End. Schools don't like to give that impression but it's the truth. No recent expansions.

Muswell hill primary is oversubscribed like all other schools in MH.

OLM has a Catholic ethos and welcomes a broad and diverse school community. Recently rated outstanding with a fantastic teaching team. MHP is terrific too - you are spoiled for choice but don’t let the Catholicism put you off - it’s a lovely school.

Interesting indeed molly.

Thank you Mrs Cobbit - that was my concern exactly but too many positive feedback for not considering it.

Why do you think all these schools are oversubscribed? You're wrong. There are gaps in lots of year groups in Muswell Hill Schools. Several schools didn't fill their reception last year. It's gone up slightly this year.

Our Lady of Muswell all the way. They have long lived in the shadows of other Muswell Hill "outstanding" primaries, but an inspection in the last six months has rightly put them into the same bracket where they sit with other schools who haven't had a full inspection since as long ago as 2006. They have an outstanding Head teacher who is wholly inclusive and puts her pupils at the heart of all that she does and a governing body that challenges and supports in equal measure. A really brilliant and well rounded school and if you're not Catholic it matters not a jot.

Yes I like Our Lady of Muswell - I am not catholic and felt strange to go for a catholic school but I agree unlike the other schools the rating is recent. Thank you everyone.
@Ourkidmolly- Sorry I meant reception classes are oversubscribed. Spoke to the council and every school had a long waiting list...
