Picking Teams in after school football club

Ds1 is 8. He has attended an after school football club for a couple of years, it is run by a separate group to the school but affiliated. It says all ages & abilities on their leaflets.

He's not great at football as he's a bit clumsy, has hyper mobile joints but enjoys the games/training and I think a couple of hours exercise does him good.

He's recently moved up groups as he's getting older and has come home upset. He says that after the drills & training they play some matches. Two boys are picked as team captains and they pick their own teams alternating who they want. Poor DS1 was last picked every time. He then said in the match he didn't touch the ball once. No one would pass to him all calling him rubbish etc.

I've settled him down and said he never has to go their again but I'm now sat seething.

I thought this was the kind of stuff that went on in the 80's? Is this normal? I get if it's a football team they can run it how they like but this is a sports based after school club!

I'm also trying to remain calm until I speak to the trainer man incase their has been a misunderstanding.

Does this still go on in schools? PE lessons etc? I can't get my head round letting 8 year olds decide who is the best/worse/popular.
