I want to question the school uniform...

I’m building up to writing to my children’s school about the uniform choices. It’s very traditional. Trousers or shorts and a polo for boys. Skirt/ pinafore/ trousers and polo for girls and also the summer dress.

I feel that the girls options are restrictive to how children should be able to play. Skirts and dresses do not make it easy to climb. The school had a large climbing frame play area for reception children and the whole school have access to a wooded copse too.

In my head I want to question whether girls should be able to wear shorts too. To enable them to play and climb as much as the boys. My daughter has worn trousers for this reason all winter. She is hindered by the summer dress now though and complains she can’t do things like climb as it catches on the equipment. I am aware also that older girls stop playing as freely when they become conscious of showing their knickers. Some where cycling/ tight shorts underneath so they can continue to do cartwheels etc. I don’t know whether this is good, I wouldn’t want to where extra layers on a hot day.

What I’m hoping for with this thread is some arguments to present to the school for girls to wear shorts. With reasons. Hopefully worded better than what I’ve written!

My daughter has the smart grey shorts in the summer and along with cycling shorts under her summer dresses (as she still likes to wear them occasionally!)
To the pp who asked how long do they spend doing handstands, my answer is ALOT if you're my 7yo or her friends! Cartwheels, headstands and hanging upside down on the tree more often than she's on two feet Grin
Don't think I read the uniform policy, just sent her in what she was comfortable in!

If shorts are on the uniform list (even defined as a 'boy' thing I'd just send her in them extremely unlikely that they will challenge it.
Our uniform list was written like this and I asked when my Dd wanted to wear them in reception. The teacher shrugged and said of course I've no idea why it has been written like that. She's been happy in shorts ever since! (now y5)
Dd highly recommends M&S boys slim fit shorts that come in a pack of 2.

Would people be so supportive if we were suggesting boys should get the opportunity to wear skirts and dresses?
They are much cooler in hot wheather and I think easier to play in.
Ds rips his trousers nearly once a month doing gymnastics on the playground and his teacher nearly got cross at him when he tried suggesting he should be allowed to wear a skirt to play in properly like the girls can.

Why not upside? As long as they were in school colours of course! Smile

upsideup of course boys should be allowed to wear skirts and dresses. The sad fact is that they'd be teased for it and are probably already aware of it not being a social norm for boys by age 4 or 5, so very few would. The world would be a better place if people didn't pretend sex and clothes are connected, the link is of course a social construct. The uniform rules shouldn't prevent boys wearing dresses any more than they should prevent girls wearing shorts though - who cares! If there has to be a uniform there is no reason to specify which sex can wear which items of clothing.

upsideup Yes, I would, absolutely, and many schools are now accepting that. It is becoming the norm for children to wear whatever they choose from the pre-defined list of uniform, whether they are male or female (or neither, for some).

M&S did a checked playsuit last year. Our head sent it out as a suggested link item.

I'd just send in shorts and play dumb tbh
