... play music in the classroom when the kids are working?

My dd has complained of having to listen to crap music (eg - Heartbeat, why do you miss when my baby kisses me etc) when she's trying to get on with her literacy worksheets.

My ds then said his teacher also puts on music. (Different teacher, different school).

Also my ds who's 7 told me today his class didn't get their French lesson because instead they watched the end of A Bugs Life.

WTF?

Early 30s Hatrick. I know it is odd isn't it? Maybe she just had some crappy local radio station on and that's what they happened to be listening to.

Good idea Soupy. Perhaps I could bring in some of my music to see if she's persaudable towards the good stuff.

If the DVD was a once off I wouldn't push it thugh (and I am The Queen of upsetting teachers- head announced her retirement early this week and I swear its because of me - anyonw who knows my story though will sympathise). Anyway though ask why perhaps? maybe there was a problem- classroom probl;ems, a staffing issue that meant they needed to cover more kids as a once off- these things happen.

Doa sk why though, that can't hurt.

pointydog · 02/05/2007 19:40

Ask if they've got a license to show videos to an audience.

That'll scare them.

PussinWellies · 02/05/2007 19:42

Our kids' school used to have classical music on during lunchtimes, and the rule was NO TALKING during the music.

Result? Children who sit in surly silence during meals, but salivate as soon as they hear anything by Mozart or Beethoven!

Classic FM still makes them hungry three years later...

welliemum · 02/05/2007 19:44

Interesting, because I'm another one who (when I could hear music - I can't now) couldn't listen to music and do anything else.

As a small child I was very musical and experienced music very intensely. Having music on while I was working would have driven me insane.

As an adult, I couldn't drive and have music on, except for very very easy stuff, because it took away too much of my attention.

I also hated writing with music on because the rhythm of the music interfered with the rhythm of the words.

Reading this thread, I see that I was in a minority, but if I were a teacher I'd want to be a bit careful about music. (The people on this thread clearly are, but the teacher in the OP possibly isn't).

Spidermama · 02/05/2007 19:47

Hatrick YES!
How did you know? I didn't know you were aquainted with their play list.

I once had a PITA who complained that I wouldn't let her dd sit by another girl....accused me of singling out her child an 'humilating' her.

The reason I wouldn't let her sit by the girl?

The SAME MOTHER had contacted the school and requested that we separate her dd and the girl in question! WTF??? She complained about me because I did what she asked!

Top that one!

She also said that her dd had told her that I regularly fell asleep in lessons. Jeeze if I'd fallen asleep in that particular class the kids would have killed and eaten me!

lapsedrunner · 02/05/2007 20:01

I must be very old as i think the idea of background music in a classroom is awful...unless it's a music lesson!

PeachyChocolateEClair · 02/05/2007 20:03

I'm a PITA

BUT MB, that parent you had surely fits the description of mentally instable better?

popsycal · 02/05/2007 20:03

SKimmed the thread

I use music from time to time but for specific reasons not generally for background noise.

However, certain pieces of music have been shown to really improve concentration - particularly classical pieces with 60 beats per minute. I also use slow classical music when doing handwriting practice. FWIW, I check whether the music is annoying anyone as some children do find music with lyrics for example distracting.

I would see the teacher and mention that while you understand why music is used in the classroom, dd finds it really distracting and is there a solution to the problem which she could suggest.
