How often does your reception-aged child read to an adult at school (not including you)?

Just curious really.

DD started school in September and seems to be doing well in reading. We try to have her read to us most days but I would say that she gets to read to another adult (ie a teacher, teaching assistant or parent helper) maybe once every 2 or 3 weeks.

We are very happy with the school and it was our first choice, but as this is all new to me I just wondered what the norm was. I do realise that education is a partnership and that's why we get her to read her reading book to us as often as possible but I like it when I see comments from other adults in the reading diary because it gives me an idea of how she is doing in the view of someone who probably knows a lot more about it than me!

I think my DD reads once a week in a small group. No comments from teaching staff in her diary though, just the book title.

There were no comments in the reading diary from other adults with DD in reception, I do not believe there was any explicit reading of that type.

She read in an "listen to read" maybe only a couple of times a term, to the teacher as a measure of progress. As part of the continuous provision, whenever she interacted with adults she likely did some "reading", depending on the task of course.

Independent school, read to teacher/ assistant twice a week. Whilst this was important for them to be able to check phonics knowledge and progress, I feel it was reading every night at home that really made the difference.

Comments from staff appear in the book diary every 2/3 weeks. But he is on the 'top table'. I think others are listened to more frequently. We read every night at home. I've been amazed with the progress he has made since he started school. No complaints here.

Where I teach, every child in every class up to Year 3 read every single day with a TA.

My DS read every day to an adult for the whole of pre-prep (YR-2) unless they were out on a school trip or something.

Now in Y3 he reads to an adult or an older child 2-3 times a week. He can read fine though, it's not really necessary anymore as they read text books etc in other curriculum subjects.

I'm a KS1 teacher and only hear children read once a week in guided reading sessions. This is actual teaching of reading (ours read from the level above the one we send home as it's the teaching level) rather than just hearing a child read their home reading book. I have my own records/assessments for this so it doesn't go in home school book. Don't forget your child will also be doing phonics at least once a day which is reading too! I don't know when I'd realistically be able to fit in hearing 30 children independently read each week without taking up a whole afternoon and we have a shortage of TAs so that's not an option. Our system works well and we have very good reading results.

My DD reads once a week to a volunteer who comes into class and once a week to the teacher as part of a guided reading session with other children, this is done in small groups.

Every child every day at my son's school - very small, rural. They get a lot of individual attention and all work at their own pace. I went to a similar primary and wanted the same for my son.

Reads to Ann unpaid volunteer twice a week. The teacher or a TA, according to their reading log, is only recorded as being once a half term - and always near a parent teacher meeting I have found!

DS is y1 now but once every 1-2 weeks. I don’t really see the value in it though - we read every day at home. I’d be annoyed if it was any more tbh. I hope the school targets attention more on the DC who don’t have such supportive adults at home.

Dd goes to an 'outstanding' state infants. She's same as your DD there's a comment in her book every 2-3 weeks. I am disappointed with this but I hear her read every day

Ds is at a private school and it’s every day tonwother their teacher or TA. He’s just started doing some group reading, but that’s documented with individual comments about his ‘bit’ in the reading diary too. He’s meant to read every day with me too, but we do it every other i would say as he’s exhausted by time he gets home.

Reads to a teacher once a week and maybe once again to a parent volunteer. I am a parent volunteer and have noticed over the past 2 years I've done it that the more able readers don't get as many chances to read to an adult. I guess it makes sense that the ones needing more help read more but it is galling that my 'more who's child isn't stretched to their full ability!

Oh, and the parent volunteers don't write in the child's reading diary, we write feedback in another book that the teacher keeps.

In reception it was once ever three or four weeks or when I asked if he was the correct book band. In yr one it’s twice a week.

Every day, alternating teacher and TA, from nursery year (i.e. R-1). Independent school.
Honestly, keep doing what you're doing, and hear her read every day. Sharing books together is the best way to encourage a love of books, and the best way for her to become a strong reader. Let her see you and her father reading too.
