Summer uniform in autumn

DD starts school in Sept. Should I get her a summer dress now, in case it's still hot then, or will they still be available in the shops come Sept?

Don't think they'll still be in the hsops.
Most people here don't wear them in September.I usually get them in the sale for the following year though so that is worth doing!

PrettyCandles · 15/04/2007 15:21

Sales - good point.

I recall most years going to school on the first day in winter uniorm, then reverting to summer uniform for most of the first half term.

If the weather is anything like last year then my two boys wore shorts up until half term in October.

Quasi · 15/04/2007 16:08

I have bought my dd's summer dresses now, ready for the autumn term. I remember being caught out by this when ds started in reception. I couldn't find school shorts for love nor money . He too wore shorts until half term last year. I can't remember the year before.

christywhisty · 15/04/2007 19:03

My daughter always wears summer dresses in first half of autumn term. Their uniform is the blue gingham and woolworths usually have them very cheap around May time so its worth buying them large then and they last until next summer.

Hulababy · 15/04/2007 19:06

We only bought the winter uniform for when DD started school last September,. I was thinking everyine would do same, But they didn't! Almost all the other girsl were in summer uniform up until half term - after which winter uniform becomes compulsary for us. So, on day 2 of school I went and bought full sumemr uniform as DD was not impressed!

MrsBadger · 15/04/2007 19:11

The a-line gingham dresses are v forgiving size-wise - look passable when too big and when too small. Soo much better than the ones with waists!

newgirl · 15/04/2007 20:11

you can order them from m and s at any time of the year - the summer dresses are six quid so not too expensive at all!

hana · 15/04/2007 20:14

I didn't buy dd the summer dress when she started based on the fact that she would have grown out of it by the time summer rolled around - and only would have worn it a few weeks in Sept. She wore a pinafore and polotop instead - most of the children in reception did the same. Very few have the summer dress even now.
just a little note - Next sizes in the dresses seem to come up v small - dd is a smallish 5 year old, and the size 6 is a perfect fit

Dd had summer uniform last year at nursery but I assumed (even though I knew summer uniform was optional up to half term) that everyone would wear winter uniform in September.

They didn't, dd and her friend (a non nursery child) were the only two girls in winter uniform. Dd's friend's mum pretty much did what Hula did. Wasn't quite so bad for them as Hula's dd as the boys were in winter uniform on the whole.

My dilemma is now what to send her in tomorrow. Last year everyone seemed to wear winter uniform up until half term, but lastyear wasn;t as hot as it is now and there seemed to be a problem with the school supplier having stock in.

Hulababy · 15/04/2007 21:31

DD goes back week Tuesday and summer unifrm is optional (compulsary from half term) but DD is determined it is summer uniform every day from now on. Have bought some vests just in case the weather turns cold again.

islandofsodor · 15/04/2007 21:36

Week Tuesday, goodness, I thought dd had long holidays.

Got robbed in the useless school suppliers shop yesterday, £23blooming .50 for one dress that is the most shapeless garment it is untrue.

Hulababy · 15/04/2007 21:36

£23 - that's a bargain. DD's striped and shapeless dress was £33!!!

Hulababy · 15/04/2007 21:37

And just why are they so shapeless?!

MrsBadger · 15/04/2007 21:37

islandofsodor what dresses do they wear? bet we could find them cheaper for you somewhere...

islandofsodor · 15/04/2007 21:41

Unfortunately not Mrs Badger, dress designed especially for the school, red striped, nearby school has identical blue striped one though hmmmmm.

I even tried to source a red striped material so I could get my own made but all the fabric available has the stipe with the white sort of flecked on it, (like the effect on the Asda/M & S striped dresses)

Really I'm just kicking myself becasue I forgot to finish work early on swop shop day where dd's friend's mum snapped up all the dresses in their size for £5 each.

islandofsodor · 15/04/2007 21:45

Actually (this is really sad) we were in JL over Easter and dd needed the loo. As we walked through the uniform dept I thought wonder if this is where hula's dd gets her uniform from?

Hulababy · 15/04/2007 21:46

islandofsodor - yes we do, JL in Sheffield is the place. Was there yesterday lunch time for a dress.

islandofsodor · 15/04/2007 21:47

Ah, I had it wrong then, it was Nottingham we were at. I always get the two places mixed up.

It's not the dropped waist one where the stripes are vertical on the bodice and horizontal on the pleated skirt?

I do sympathise... the £6 a-line M&S ones are so much nicer but will they let you wera them?

bozza · 15/04/2007 21:54

I would imagine some girls do go in summer uniforms. DS has gone in shorts for the last two years. Early September can be quite warm.

fuckwit · 15/04/2007 21:55

i am buying ds shorts now because you cannot get them in autumn

Hulababy · 15/04/2007 21:56

islandsofsodor -this is DD's shapeless £33 dress!

roisin · 15/04/2007 22:11

My mum was telling me this weekend that at her school you could buy the summer uniform fabric from one particular drapers shop, but then you could get it made up into any style you liked!

I was really surprised as here school was very strict, measured the length of skirt hems, deportment classes, that sort of thing.
