Summer uniform in autumn

DD starts school in Sept. Should I get her a summer dress now, in case it's still hot then, or will they still be available in the shops come Sept?

get it in the next size up - won't matter if it is big.

The first sept my sone spent in uniform I was scouring the shops for grey shorts - very hard to find!

PrettyCandles · 15/04/2007 22:44

We had that in my schools, Roisin, as long as you complied with basic rules re modest and practical style.

I had no idea that there was any restriction when the children would be allowed/required to wear summer/winter uniform. I assumed that you could switch between them depending on the weather.

Anyway, I shall keep an eye out for the sales, and buy them in a larger size for dd.

Tomorrow 6yo ds1 is going to school in shorts sized 4y! He's such a slender-shanks that they still fit, but only just .

well , no restrictions at dd's primary school

Clary · 16/04/2007 00:20

Yeah, I wondered this with DD. Didn't in the end but it's not a bad idea if you can successfully forecast her size (then add a bit so as to wear in the following April too).

Actually have just realised hers from last year were outed as being too small so it's skirt and polo shirt tomorrow

PS if you don't min dsupporting terrorists (joke) Asda dresses were the best last year, nicest styles, most cotton, washed best and - tada - cheapest too. £3 IIRC. at Hula's DD's dress!!

Gingerbear · 16/04/2007 05:20

Clary, I bought DD's dresses in the Asda sale last year for £1.75.

Still think M&S wash and wear the best though.

Gingerbear · 16/04/2007 05:21

at £33 for a school dress!

Clary · 16/04/2007 10:10

GB that's such a bargain!

I esp liked the zip-up sporty one from Asda. Must get down there. Did find DD needed a larger size tho.

anniebear · 16/04/2007 11:02

My DD's have gone in their summer dresses today, but I havent seen anyone start school in sep wearing them beofre, everyone just has the proper uniform on then

Hope that helps

Tinkerbel5 · 16/04/2007 20:14

Prettycandles buy a dress 1 size bigger and let your DD wear it when she starts in September as im sure there will be other little girls wearing them, in DD's school they wear them until October time when it starts to get cold

my children are at state school and they are only allowed to wear summer uniform in summer term and first half of autumn term.

Clary · 17/04/2007 00:29

Yes cat64 that's bizarre isn't it. I recall last year when it was sooooo hot seeing all these tinies in FS2 wearing long trousers. Phew!

MummyPenguin · 17/04/2007 10:14

Haven't read all the thread, but wanted to say that it's worth picking her up a summer dress now. Whem my DD started, my Mum picked her up one for about 3 quid in the sale in BHS. At the time, I thought we'd never use it, but I'm glad we had it, as that year it was a really hot September and she wore it. I wasn't worried about the possibility of her being the only one, I just wanted her to be comfortable as I thought that was more important, as the autumn/winter uniform includes shirt and tie for girls as well as boys. I wish our school would introduce a polo shirt for the boys for the summer, but they never have. The girls get their cool cotton dresses, but the poor lads have to still suffer the stiff collar and tie.

MummyPenguin · 17/04/2007 10:18

Yes, the £33 dress... brings to mind my Nephew's private school. They have a school jacket for autumn/winter, it's not even a nice smart one, it's like a puffa type, it's navy pinstripe on a white background with red piping. It's £90 Madness. My Sister was chuffed when she picked one up in the school second hand uniform sale, but it was still £45.

MummyPenguin · 17/04/2007 10:19

LOL at 'fuckwit' !! great name!

Jealousyisgreen · 17/04/2007 10:22

dd wore her blue and white gingham dress yesterday with a pair of white socks.

Today she wanted to wear it again, but I insisted on tights under it, as it's not as warm today!

There is no restriction as to when they can and cant wear their dresses!!

Enid · 17/04/2007 11:10

dd2s pre-school has strict uniform summer dress at £25

I refuse and send her in M and S - she looks almost identical to the others but not quite

bozza · 17/04/2007 11:15

I too cannot understand all the boys who go in long trousers. DS loves shorts and although he is still on holiday I am sure he will be into them when he gets back. Might get him to try them on tonight actually.

LIZS · 17/04/2007 11:15

Our summer dresses are £30 plus. dd had one new when she started and makes do with 2nd hand otherwise at less than a tenner a go. Looks a bit sack like though as she is so petite ! Sumemr uniform is complusory after Easter and optional until Autumn half term, but in practise most wear it during September at least.

christywhisty · 17/04/2007 11:27

My son wore shorts in summer in infants then said refused after that. Turned out he had an alterior motive. They are allowed to play on the field in the summer and he liked going in the long grass but gets scratched and stung.

summer dress update - raided sainsbos and Asda tonight. Asda's nice cottony dress of last year is restyled and horrid, also sold out (bizarre).

Still like their zippy one tho. £4 a go.

Sainsbo's here have green (as well as red and yellow and blue) but then we have quite a few green uniform primaries here.

Boys' shorts v v v hard to find. Found one pair which may or may not fit DS1 but very sold out for which I suppose we can blame the sunny weather....
