3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ support thread 2018

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. Flowers

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas👏🏼

(Roll on 2018!) 😉

Nlcs maybe though they'd say not. Habs no, not in my experience anyway.

Happy New Year!
At 4/5+ , most schools try and conduct assessments with others born in the same month so to try and get an even spread of ages. At 7+ it's less of an issue. Some also split according to if they have siblings and often siblings at the same school.

Momof3toB · 02/01/2018 06:48

Exciting week ahead!!! We have Habs this week and SH second round (we can't make the date they originally gave us)

MumDad999 · 02/01/2018 09:05

Excited/Nervous all in one! Busy couple of weeks I think!

Good luck everyone!

On the summer born question, NLCS claimed they don't have a bias but have heard differently.

Habs however had a wall chart on the window which showed the number of kids in the class by birth month and it was fairly evenly split.

Mamabear1719 · 02/01/2018 09:31

Good luck to you all!

Ma518 · 02/01/2018 11:34

Good luck everyone!
Out of interest, do any schools publish how many sibling places are given ?

hiyasminitsme · 02/01/2018 12:23

Most have no sibling policy. St christophers take all sibs. Highgate have a slight preference for sibs at 7.

Hello mums, my dd has her assessments in habs and nlcs starting Friday and looks like she is getting chicken pox.. will the School be willing to reschedule her assessment? They say to call them if we cannot attend on the assigned date, but I doubt they will rearrange.. I am so sad and disappointed..

Mama bear - where are you sitting 3+ for ?
AAGG123- I would call them tomorrow rather than the assessment day and if she is poorly go to Dr tomorrow also, so you have a record of it !
I know someone who rearranged an assessment as it clashed with their school play and they got in !!!!

This article maybe of interest. It was in City kids magazine (I believe it's a few months old)

All the best to all DD. And hope all parents get some sleep including me. My DD has her LEH assessment on Thursday. Does anyone in the group has 7+ assessment this week? @ mumof3tobe I share the same pain. We got champagne in sep 2016 but discovered I was pregnant since then I have a unopened bottle in my refrigerator. May be DD1 will give me an opportunity to open it. And yes, I have made her to write a story if she decides to stay up after bed time which is 8:00. 🙄 I have been waiting for this time since past 2 years. A big part of my brain will be empty after exams need to find new goal post.

Back to assessment, our NLCS is on 18th Jan. I will be glad to hear from 7+ parents about there chalanges if any.

Colossal apologies for being MIA for so long. We've had an immediate family member crucially ill.
I have also lost access to my original mumsnet account (mumteacher) so have had to re-register. 😬

Mumteacher1 · 03/01/2018 04:36

There's a handful of top tier schools who will be bias towards the older girls at the 4+ assessments. The schools assess in birthday month to enable comparative selection.

Mumteacher1 · 03/01/2018 04:44

I don't understand 'looks like she is getting chicken pox' she either has them or not.
If she does please call the schools and explain. Since chicken pox is contagious they may suggest another date for assessment.
With a child who is 'generally under the weather' (cough/cold) some schools will not offer an alternative date but for pox most school will.

This is the second case of chicken pox I've heard of in the last week, which a bit strange even the time of year.

You may need a doctors note to prove pox.

Mumteacher1 · 03/01/2018 04:50

Someone asked about both parents attending assessments.
If sitting 3/4+ only both go if you know your child will detach easily without fuss.
If mum usually does the nursery run then the child is use to leaving mum then maybe dad shouldn't attend round 1 assessments. Only you know how your child will react with having to walk away from you with a stranger.

I'll add here that round 2 might be apt for both parents to attend especially at Habs.
