3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ support thread 2017

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those parents involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. Flowers

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas.

Habs 7+ round 2 question from last year that was q interesting compared to general ones...

"If you could go back in time and meet someone famous who would it be and why"

Thank you Fitnessfanatic108 for the post.

Did nlcs contact your nursery for reference before assessments ?

Mummywow · 18/01/2017 14:40

Hi bluestsrryskye I was wondering the same. Actually asked this morning and our head couldn't remember....I have a feeling they don't ask for them?

shopgal9 · 18/01/2017 14:52

Hi Bluestsrryskye my DD's nursery was asked for a reference by NLCS.

Bluestarrysky · 18/01/2017 15:03

Thanks

Bluestarrysky · 18/01/2017 17:13

I think some schools do it for all the candidates irrespective before the assessments I heard jags did it November . So it's no sign Hmm

LilaGrace · 18/01/2017 18:00

They usually do it either before round 2 if there's a big gap (like shhs) or before round 1 if the gap is small (like NLCS) for all candidates.

Hi All

This is my first time on here so I am sorry in advance.

Our DD is going through the 7+ process at Highgate, South Hampstead and Channing. She is currently at a state primary and we are slightly lost in the whole process. She has surprised us all by getting interviews at each of the above - we have a kind and bright kid but not a genius definitely - though we worked very hard!

I wanted to ask - does anyone here have a sense of what the numbers are like once we are down to the interview/activity stage? Is it still as bad as 3 or 4 to 1? or not so scary? Our DD is a reserved child - kind and warm but quiet and I cannot imagine how she would come across in a 1-2 hour "thing" with other bright but also confident kids. Are people having similar thoughts/experiences? Does anyone have a sense of what these schools are likely to be looking for?

the above is a bit of a mess I am sorry but any comforting words or reality checks are much appreciated!

all the best to all parents who are going through this unfortunate c*ap of an experience.

Swift16 · 18/01/2017 20:07

I think most here are finding this experience less than enjoyable. Regarding your questions - i will venture a guess based on the info i got from school visits last fall: at the interview rounds odds end up being closer to 50/50. If i am not mistaken highgate said they are inviting 120-140 and they will give out about 70-80 offers. (These numbers are from rough memory!)
I heard that schools look for a "fit" which i suspect varies quite a bit amongst these. Curious to hear other opinions as we also have a couple of interviews coming up.

Bluestarrysky · 18/01/2017 20:17

Lilagrace thanks !

bialystockandbloom · 18/01/2017 20:33

superdad we're in the same position for 7+ with our dd but in south London. Went through a similar experience with ds a couple of years ago but this time we're looking at much harder schools so it's way more stressful than I thought! Dd has interview for one next week, have no idea how she's going to do. She's bright but totally not a 'performer'. I'm rationalising it to myself that if that's the kind of person they're looking for then it's not the right school for her anyway.

I have heard though that the interview/2nd round stage is still predominantly based on academic performance, with the 'interview' bit being a much smaller part. But who knows? So hard to get much info anywhere, even friends whose dc did it before seem to have blocked the whole experience out!

mumteacher · 18/01/2017 20:48

Well done to all those through to round 2.

7+ clap a rhythm and ask your child to clap it back.
Working in pairs to construct an object possibly out of Lego. More mental maths.
Physical tasks like games lessons.

Joining late: DD sat the 7+ at South Hampstead and we haven't heard anything. Can anyone shed any light on whether this means bad news?

user1477249785 · 19/01/2017 12:17

Small hopeful bump. Does anyone know how results are sent out? Email or post?

SuperDad1981 · 19/01/2017 12:34

Hi - we received a letter on Wednesday afternoon.

user1477249785 · 19/01/2017 12:42

Thanks for the reply. So in the mail? I'm hoping they haven't posted ours because it will take a week to get to us...
